West Ham are in the hunt to sign former Premier League attacker Hatem Ben Arfa, according to a reliable journalist.

Nizar Hanini, a reporter for Foot365, shared via his personal Twitter account, that the Hammers were a suitor for the 31-year-old winger who is currently a free agent after his Paris St Germain contract expired earlier this month.

The Chronicle previously reported in March ahead of Ben Arfa’s contract expiring that Leicester City had gained a big interest in signing the former Newcastle United player this summer.

OPINION

Ben Arfa featured 84 times in the Premier League playing for both Newcastle United and Hull City, so a lot of Hammers supporters probably remember what a promising talent the attacking midfielder looked like. However during his time in England, he consistently was unavailable for selection due to constantly being sidelined with injuries. While since leaving England he has managed to show glimpses of his talent in France at PSG and at Nice, injuries have still hampered his career. The 31-year-old, who can play as a centre-forward, attacking midfielder as well as winger on either flank, spent the majority of his latest campaign at PSG not involved with the first-team with Unai Emery opting not to use him. Given his past injury record and the fact he isn’t coming off the most convincing of seasons, the Hammers would be taking a huge gamble on him if they were to recruit him anytime soon. Ben Arfa may have scored 13 goals, while getting 13 assists, in his Premier League outings but given that he is now older and still has questions marks over his fitness, the Hammers really should look elsewhere.
