West Ham United are in the hunt to sign Mexico international Diego Reyes on a free transfer this summer, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster report that the Hammers are in a three-way battle for the colossal 25-year-old’s signature following his departure from Porto after five years.

Sky Sports claim that Premier League rivals Newcastle United are also interested in the 55-cap international enforcer, with Turkish side Fenerbahce having already submitted an offer to Reyes, who stands at 6ft 3in tall [Transfermarkt].

OPINION

Considering the fact that the Hammers have already signed two centre-backs this summer – Issa Diop from Toulouse and Fabian Balbuena from Corinthians – a move for Reyes would look unnecessary at first glance. However, the chance to sign a 53-cap international on a free transfer does not come around very often, and the Hammers would do well to win the race for his signature. Also, looking at their centre-back options, Reyes would quite easily slot in alongside Diop as first-choice in the middle if he did end up at the London Stadium. A move for the Mexican is therefore a no-brainer, and it is not surprising to see Manuel Pellegrini quickly in for the 25-year-old. In terms of how likely this one is to go through, it does look as though Fenerbahce are in the best position to sign Reyes having already submitted an offer, but should the Hammers do the same in the coming days you would think they have a decent chance of hijacking the deal. However, that would have to happen soon to come to fruition.
