West Ham are preparing to announce the appointment of Mario Husillos as their new recruitment chief, according to a club insider.

Ex-WHU Employee, who breaks a vast number of Hammers stories ahead of the mainstream media, reported on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday morning that the Argentine will be named at the club’s new director of football.

He explained that a statement is being prepared by the Premier League club to unveil Husillos in the most senior role and not, contrary to reports, as chief scout.

OPINION

Given Ex-WHU Employee’s excellent track record for breaking West Ham transfer and recruitment stories, among others, you would be wise not to bet against him on this. He is referring to a story in the Sun newspaper on Monday in which it stated that Manuel Pellegrini had lost a boardroom battle with the board for Husillos to be named head of recruitment, and he had instead been given a take-it-or-leave-it offer to be chief scout. It will soon be clear who is right, as West Ham look to reshape the club’s transfer methods following a series of duff signings in the last few years. Not since the summer of 2015 have the club got it consistently right in the market, and the arrival of an expert with the mandate to effect change and negotiate the deals, rather than leave them in the hands of co-owner David Sullivan, is a long overdue change of policy. Husillos’ recent spell at Malaga was not a success but he has a track record of ensuring his employers punch above their weight. How West Ham need that right now.
