It would be a stunning statement of intent if West Ham were successful in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Javier Pastore.

News emerged on Friday that the Hammers were working on a deal to land the Argentina international after talks had begun over a summer deal.

Hope that the club could pull off a stunning deal has now increased after it was reported in France that Pastore’s agent has jetted into London for talks.

RMC journalist Saber Desfarges claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday night that the player’s representatives have held positive talks with the Hammers after Sky Sports reported that the Premier League club is discussing a deal that could be worth up to £17.5million.

Before West Ham fans start buying replica shirts with Pastore’s name emblazoned on the back in the tens of thousands, they should be aware that the transfer fee is unlikely to be the main hurdle to what would be an amazing signing.

That would be reaching an agreement with a player who is already on a massively lucrative package at PSG and who will not be short of offers this summer.

Ex-WHU Employee, a reliable source of news about the London club, has claimed Pastore earns an eyewatering £190,000-a-week in France.

Given that West Ham’s top earner is Javier Hernandez, who became the best paid in the club’s history with a deal worth around £130,000-a-week last summer, there will have to be a bit of give from the Argentine to secure a deal.

It is hugely encouraging for the Hammers faithful that a true A-lister could join, but it is far from a done deal.
