West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has been taking the lead in the club’s transfer dealings this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Sam Inkersole of Football.London stated during a Q&A session for the site that while Manuel Pellegrini was in Chile and director of football Mario Husillos in Spain then Sullivan took the lead in negotiations.

However Inkersole did go onto state that while Sullivan will be involved to some degree as he is the club’s money man, once Pellegrini and Husillos are in London the co-chairman will take a back seat.

“All the while Pellegrini was back in Chile and Husillos was in Spain, Sullivan was taking the lead in negotiations over transfers (why do you think we saw so many £17.5m bids go in for players in Europe?) and I think that was always the plan,” wrote Inkersole on Football.London.

“One the manager and director of football are in London, then Sullivan will take a step back, but, as we know, he will still have his fingerprints over any move as he is the money man at the end of the day.”

OPINION

It seems that Sullivan has been running the show in regards to transfer and with one confirmed deal it’s hard to judge him. The club have been constantly linked with moves for a variety of players but you can’t judge him on every report that emerges as you can never be sure how accurate they are. While Hammers supporters will be urging Pellegrini and Husillos to rock up in London as soon as possible to take over from Sullivan, it seems that this transfer window looks like it going to end up a success. There are several promising deals being reported as being close to completition with all of them sounding like they will improve the squad ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. The majority of expected arrivals are set to address the club’s leaky defence which let the side down on more than one occasion last season. Hopefully once Pellegrini and Husillos are more settled into their roles, so by January, Sullivan will be just a mere box ticker in proceedings.
