Rangers are keen to sign West Ham defender Reece Burke as they continue the massive overhaul of their back line, according to a Hammers insider.

Ex-WHU Employee, who consistently breaks stories around the London club, has claimed in a column for the West Ham Way site that the Glasgow giants are looking to land Burke, 21, despite already signing two centre-backs this week in Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson.

It is explained that Burke is expected to leave soon but Rangers face competition for his signature from English Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn, Swansea and Ipswich.

OPINION

Rangers have certainly not wasted any time this summer as their huge reshaping of the squad that flopped last season goes into overdrive. New manager Steven Gerrard and the Ibrox recruitment staff have already pushed six new signings over the line, including defensive duo Katic and Goldson this week. Could Burke soon be joining them? It’s possible, as the Glasgow giants are still in need of one more senior centre-back following the exit of David Bates and Russell Martin’s return to Norwich City after his loan spell. With Bruno Alves also playing for Portugal at the World Cup, there are holes to fill in the squad as Rangers prepare for their Europa League qualification programme. Burke impressed on loan at Bolton last season, where his performances helped keep them in the Championship. He has played 15 times for boyhood club West Ham, but he has not established himself in the first team and the club are looking to bring in two new centre-backs. He is likely to leave, but the Londoners are weighing up whether to cash in on the in-demand youngster or send him out on loan again.
