Paul Merson has predicted West Ham to win when they host Everton on the last day of the Premier League season.

The Hammers welcome the Toffees to the London Stadium on Sunday and will hope to end the campaign in style.

David Moyes’ team earned a 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Thursday night and have kept two consecutive clean sheets, despite being defensively weak for most of the season.

They are 15th-placed going into the season finale, but are just two points adrift of Newcastle in 10th.

Sky Sports pundit Merson has tipped West Ham to earn a narrow 1-0 victory against Everton, but both teams will see it very much as a free hit.

“It depends what teams the managers put out but when I was playing for nothing on the final game of the season, I went out there and expressed myself,” Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

“They’ve picked up a bit recently, West Ham, and Everton aren’t going to score a load of goals away from home. There’s still some grumbling against the manager too. Narrow home win.

OPINION

West Ham have endured a fairly mixed season that is likely to be forgotten quickly in the memory and they will surely have an extremely busy summer ahead of them. The future of manager David Moyes is still very much up for discussion, while the current squad appears to be miles away from competing for the European spots next season. The Hammers supporters were expecting European football to become more a regular feature following the move to a new ground, but it was always going to take a while to settle at the London Stadium. West Ham somehow need to try turn their home into a fortress, with London rivals Arsenal proving this season you can be effective in a big stadium. There is definitely potential with star names such as Marko Arnautovic, Declan Rice and Manuel Lanzini integral to the team, but there has to be a few high-profile additions on top of that too.
