Jose Cabello could join Manuel Pellegrini’s backroom team as the new West Ham fitness coach, according to the Times.

The newspaper claim the Spaniard, 44, is in line to link up with Pellegrini for a fourth time after they worked together at Heibi China Fortune, Manchester City and Malaga.

The Times report that Cabello would be a direct replacement for Nick Davies, who joined in January but left following the dismissal of David Moyes.

With a three-year contract signed, Pellegrini will now be busy assembling his backroom team and making key hires behind the scenes. Like most managers, the Chilean has his trusted allies who work with him on ensuring the players are in the best possible condition on match day. Rubén Cousillas has an association with Pellegrini dating back 20 years, while Cabello has also worked with the Chilean for nearly a decade. Like Pellegrini and Cousillas, Cabello is a Spanish speaker and English is very much a second language. This could prove a slight issue over the coming campaign, and it might help the West Ham players if there was a native Englishman to ensure nothing is lost in translation. Julian Dicks fulfilled this role when Slaven Bilic was at the helm, and a similar appointment of a popular former Hammer would go down well with supporters who love to see old boys given prominent roles.
