West Ham have endured plenty of issues this season but one shining light for the Hammers as been the performances of young defender Declan Rice.

The 19-year-old has been thrust into the first-team fold following a number of injuries in defence and Rice, who recently earned his debut for the Republic of Ireland, has caught the eye with some superb performances- and his impressive displays continued in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

That result has seen the Hammers extend their advantage over the relegation to six-points and Rice once again caught the eye, which led to plenty of pride for academy boss Terry Westley.

Speaking to Claret & HughWestley was full of pride for his academy prodigy as he said:

“He is playing in the most difficult position possible in the Premier League and is just 19 years of age. How many 19-year-olds are there at central defence in the Premier League?”

“That’s Southampton and Chelsea, two incredibly pressurised games given our situation and yet he hasn’t made a single mistake and is totally calm in everything he does. Some of his interventions when danger threatened were extraordinary.”

“He has a great attitude off the pitch too, he’s always ready to listen and learn. Who knows how far he can go. I’m very proud of him.”

Rice’s coming of age campaign has led to him making 25 appearances across all competitions for the Hammers this season.
