West Ham continue to overhaul their defensive lines, having signed Patrice Evra on a free transfer and allowed Portuguese centre-half Jose Fonte to leave this month and move to China.

The former Southampton man was only signed in January 2017 but failed to make a lasting impression at the London Stadium, with a remarkable claim now being stated.

According to The Scottish Sun, the European Championship winning defender refused a request from David Moyes to feature in a reserve match against Dagenham & Redbridge, which was organised to improve the fitness of those recovering from injury.

The report reads:

“The game was at Dagenham & Redbridge and to Moyes’ frustration Jose Fonte didn’t fancy pulling on his boots at the National League club’s ground. Now, Fonte is signing for Dalian Yifang in the Chinese Super League.”

“He couldn’t cross London for a reserve game but is answering the call of the cash register five thousand miles away. Don’t you love the modern day player?”

Whilst the claims are unconfirmed, it does show why West Ham were so keen to offload him- after approving a sale of around £4.8m.
