West Ham look set to endure frustration in their attempts to secure the services of their preferred defensive target, with reports suggesting the club in question are demanding an audacious fee.

The Daily Star states new Swansea City boss Carlos Carvahal is determined to retain the services of Alfie Mawson this month, as the Swans seek to push themselves away from the relegation fight and to remain in the Premier League.

23-year-old Mawson has emerged as a prime target for the Hammers during January’s window, with the East London side also seeking to retain their top-flight status, but it seems their advances are likely to fall on deaf ears.

Speaking ahead of the return of Premier League action this weekend, Carvahal revealed he’s under no pressure to sell this month and suggested only a ridiculous sum could tempt them into a sale of a key-man.

“When I signed (as manager last month) it was very clear we would try and bring in players to improve the team. We will not sell the best players in January, the message is clear.”

“I have had guarantees from the chairman, but it depends if someone comes in and gives £50m, £100m, £250m.”

West Ham are extremely unlikely to front such a figure and, as such, will likely have to move elsewhere if they’re to bolster their frail defensive line.
