West Ham may face a battle to retain one of their more experienced players in the mid-season window, amidst reports that a relegation rival are eyeing a swoop on the Hammers.

The SunĀ claims Southampton are keen on landing England international Andy Carroll in the January transfer window as they look to turn around a poor run of form in recent weeks which has seen them sucked into the relegation fight.

Carroll has just one full season left on his contract at the London Stadium and has struggled to earn regular starting opportunities this season, as well as failing to find the form required to establish himself as a key-man in West Ham’s set-up.

However, approving a departure to a Premier League rival this month is extremely unlikely- particularly as West Ham have already made two strikers available in the window, with Moyes keen to offload both Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho.

Carroll is likely to remain in East London and battle the likes of Javier Hernandez, Marko Arnautovic and Michail Antonio for central striking opportunities in the second-half of the season.
