West Ham have been linked to a number of midfielders during the January transfer window but the fans hoping for recruits have been handed another blow.

The Hammers have been reported to be keen on bringing Scottish international Robert Snodgrass back from his loan at Aston Villa, where he has impressed in the Championship after a disappointing time in East London.

Snodgrass has excelled with five goals and seven assists so far this season, showing the sort of cutting edge that West Ham lack in the attacking third, but West Ham’s assistant manager Alan Irvine has revealed a deal is not possible.

Quoted by The ExpressIrvine said he was not aware of any clause allowing Snodgrass to return to West Ham this month- meaning a transfer is off the table.

“I believe that he is there for the year, I don’t know what the arrangement was, I am not aware of any opportunity for us to recall him,”

“He is doing really well, I saw a but of him at the weekend and the quality he has and funny enough, he’s a player I tried to sign at West Brom but didn’t get to him. But I don’t think that we can call him back.”

Snodgrass fell down the pecking order during Slaven Bilic’s reign in East London but he may well have a chance to become a first-team asset once again next season.
