Subject to a lot of interest from the Hammers in the opening few weeks of the January transfer window, David Moyes’ chase for the young defender seems to have cooled but the Scottish boss should reignite a West Ham move in the final week of the window.
The 24-year-old, who provided Swansea City with a crucial boost this week by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Liverpool, would significantly improve a frail West Ham back line and, crucially, could be the player to build around in the coming years.
With James Collins approaching the end of his contract and other members of the defence also being the wrong side of 30, West Ham need a fresh injection of younger talent into their defensive line and Mawson would be a stellar recruit.
