West Ham’s intent to bolster their defensive ranks has become clear amidst reports that David Moyes is looking to secure a January move for an experienced Premier League defender.

The Daily Mirror report that the Hammers are the latest club to express an interest in West Brom defender Jonny Evans, though they face stiff competition in the market from fellow strugglers Everton and Premier League leaders Manchester City.

29-year-old Evans, who worked with Moyes briefly during the pair’s time at Manchester United, has established himself as one of the division’s leading defenders after bringing an end to an 11-year association with the Red Devils.

His signature would certainly prove to be expensive though and could blow the entirety of Moyes’ January budget, certainly eclipsing the club-record fee paid for Marko Arnautovic’s services in the summer.

Costing around £30m, West Ham may have to approve some departures if they’re to have the funds to sign Evans and also improve other areas of their under-performing side.
