West Ham striker Andy Carroll says he has not been too impressed with Hammers fans leaving the London Stadium early.
The 28 year old cited performances against Tottenham where West Ham have managed to turn things around after supporters have left the ground, as well as contrasting the fans’ attitude with Crystal Palace supporters staying to see Wilfried Zaha equalise against the Hammers in the 97th minute. The forward was quoted as saying:
“They really should be staying. They should be staying until the end. You never know what’s going to happen. They walked out at half time against Tottenham when we were getting beat 2-0 and we turned it round. Palace fans last week. Look what happened in the 97th minute. Fans should stay until the end, regardless of the team.”
Unsurprisingly such comments did not go down too well with supporters. It is a two way street when it comes to fans supporting the team. Supporters are expected to back the players to help win games, but at the same time, performances from the team must merit the backing.
The sacking of manager Slaven Bilic today demonstrates the downward spiral the team is on, and the lack of belief among fans that a turnaround with the current crop of players is possible.
Whether this belief can be restored under a new manager, it remains to be seen. Here is some of the Twitter reaction to Carroll’s comments:
#WHUFC If Andy Carroll could spend more than 90 minutes in a training session or do the job he’s paid to do then we may stay for 96 minutes

I’m guessing that Andy Carroll wishes he’d kept his mouth shut?
Overpaid, unfit, buffoon. #WHUFC

The players only turn up for twenty minutes. Who’s really in the wrong?

For Andy Carroll to lecture others on personal responsibility has to be a pinnacle of self-deluded hubris.

Why dont he concentrate on being fit for more than 20 games a season!
