Former West Ham United defender Neil Ruddock has slammed the appointment of David Moyes as manager, but says he hopes the Scot can prove him wrong.

Moyes was named as the club’s new manager early last week after Slaven Bilic was let go from his position after what was a poor start to the season, with the Hammers currently sitting in 18th position in the Premier League and having won only 2 of their 11 top flight games so far.

Ruddock, who spent two seasons with the club in the late 90s, believes the powers that be have made the wrong choice in appointing the former Everton and Manchester United man.

He told TalkSPORT: “As soon as I heard it was David Moyes, I just visualised him sitting on the bench at Sunderland – a broken man. I want him to do well at West Ham, I want him to prove the point he is a good manager, but in my mind’s eye I just see him sitting there at Sunderland.

“I would have gone for Chris Hughton. The club are alright paying £20m on a striker or midfield player who is not good enough, but they won’t spend £5m on a manager. To be fair, the West Ham fans are a bit ruthless and they can get on your back.

“I don’t think they’ve got enough men, I think every player has got five per cent more to give and David Moyes has got to find that. If he finds that five per cent more from every player, I think they’ll be fine.”
