Sporting Lisbon are demanding £40 million for William Carvalho which has caused his proposed move to West Ham to stall, reports The Sun.

The Hammers originally had offered the Portuguese side around £27.1 million, however were hiked up to around £36 million by Sporting, a price the Hammers believed to be enough to secure the want away midfielder.

However, it is increasingly likely West Ham will now miss out on the Portugal international after Sporting have demanded that the Hammers smash their current transfer record for his services with an astonishing £40 million. Both sides are yet to agree on a price despite Carvalho reportedly agreeing personal terms with the East London club.

It is likely that Sporting are asking for such a price due to the heavy inflation of this summer’s transfer market, with huge fees being paid for players across Europe, including PSG’s near £200 million move for Brazil star Neymar.

Slaven Bilic will continue to pursue Carvalho despite the deal hitting a road-bump, but may have to turn his attentions elsewhere should the asking price be too much.
