West Ham succumbed to a brilliant Manchester United performance on Sunday afternoon as they opened their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 defeat.

Red Devils debutant Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring 12 minutes before half-time after Marcus Rashford ran half the length of the pitch and fed the Belgian with a delightfully weighted through ball.

The former Everton star doubled his side’s lead and his own tally early in the second half, heading home from Henrikh Mkhiaryan’s free-kick after finding himself unmarked in the box.

West Ham, backs against the wall for much of the game, managed to hold on till late, however the introduction of Frenchman Anthony Martial was too much. The 21-year-old ran clear only minutes after coming on to make it 3-0, before turning provider on the stroke of 90 minutes for the impressive Paul Pogba to complete the rout.

As much as it was a lacklustre performance from the Hammers, it was in equal measure brilliant from United, who have asserted themselves as title challengers as early as the first weekend with the quite terrific display.
