Winston Reid has promised a better performance against Southampton next week after the Hammers’ disappointing 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Slaven Bilic’s side find themselves bottom of the Premier League following the rout at Old Trafford, in which a Romelu Lukaku brace, as well as goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba dispatched a lacklustre West Ham.

Reid, vice captain behind Mark Noble, was admittedly down about the result, but despite the Hammers next three games in all competitions being away from home, the New Zealand international promises for better.

“They made us pay for every mistake, we have to be tough on ourselves, because some of those mistakes we caused ourselves.” said Reid.

“We are starting a new season and we obviously didn’t do well on Sunday, so we have to move forward, learn from our mistakes and watch the video and make sure that, come next week, we put in a much better performance.”

One positive from Sunday’s defeat was the debut’s of all four of the club’s major signings this summer, and Reid believes those players will prove to be crucial to the club as the season goes on.

“It does help that the players we have signed have played in the Premier League before,” he said. “I’m sure that, once we get things gelling and have had another week working hard on the training pitch, we’ll be a lot better.

“The new players have fitted in perfectly and they’ll help us move forward.”
