Javier Hernandez believes West Ham can take plenty of heart from the weekend’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Southampton, despite the result leaving the Hammers rock bottom of the Premier League table.

Chicharito scored twice in the defeat to Mauricio Pellegrino’s side in order to level the score going into the final etchings of the game, but was denied earning his side a point thanks to an injury time penalty from Saints forward Charlie Austin.

Despite leaving St Mary’s with nothing to show for it though, Hernandez believes the Hammers can walk away with their heads held high.

“When you’re playing most of the game with ten men it’s really frustrating,” Hernandez conceded: “But we came back. It is very hard to play with just ten men. With eleven men it’s hard so with ten it’s very, very hard. We did it pretty well and we were drawing the game.” said Hernandez following the defeat.

“Sometimes we make mistakes. It’s very frustrating because we played a good game after the sending off. We need to move forward.”

The former Manchester United striker also revealed he was pleased to open his West Ham account, and hopes he can take confidence in his brace to go forward and continue to find the net for his new club.

“I’m happy that I scored two goals. You need to look on the bright side, at the positive things. Getting off the mark gives me motivation and it gives me confidence.”
