Former West Ham United defender Paul Konchesky says it was ‘weird’ to play against some familiar faces last week when he took on the Terry Westley’s U23s side whilst playing for new club Billericay Town.

Konchesky was part of Glenn Tamplin’s Billericay side that beat the Hammers 3-1, and found himself playing against a number of young players he now mentors. As well as playing for the Essex side, the former England international is also working towards his coaching qualifications back at his former stomping ground Chadwell Heath.

“It was weird playing against some of those lads, but of course it was a great evening and for me, it’s always nice coming up against the team that you support,” said the 36-year-old.

“It doesn’t matter what age they are – it’s always a great thing to do. They’re a good bunch of lads – some I know pretty well now – but ultimately it was great to beat them!”

Although Konchesky’s side ran out victorious in the tie, the full back said he was impressed with the quality of the young players at the club, and believes many of them have a bright future at the London Stadium.

“They gave us a good test on the pitch, as well. First half, I think we were on top and the strength and power showed.

“They are still young boys though and they’re still developing, and that’s what I’m trying to help with at the Academy. You never know when you’re that age – I’m sure many have a great future ahead of them.”
