Andy Carroll is closing in on his return to first team action after resuming training with Slaven Bilic’s side this week, says the Daily Mail.

The injury-prone striker had been suffering from a thigh injury from the end of last season, and took no part in the club’s pre-season tour of Europe.

Having now made his return to training however, Slaven Bilic is weighing up as to whether to give Carroll the chance to play against his former side Newcastle in two weeks time, however given the longevity of the forward’s time on the sidelines the Croatian is likely to wait to hand Carroll a return to action.

Carroll trained yesterday with the first-team, and made it through the session without any problems.

Upon his return, Carroll now finds himself competing for his spot in Bilic’s side with the Hammers having completed the high profile signing of former Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez earlier this summer.

Hernandez will remain as the club’s first choice striker despite Carroll’s imminent recovery.
