Former Hammer Teddy Sheringham has stated his belief that Barcelona frontman Lionel Messi is the greatest player to ever grace a football pitch in an interview with Esquire.

Sheringham spoke in the interview of his greatest goals, time at both West Ham and Milwall, as well as the struggle of dealing with Gazza as a room-mate, but it was his insights into the Argentine magician that most caught the eye.

“People always have this conversation of who is the best player in the world, Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, and for me it’s Messi. It is ridiculous the things that he can do.” said the former Stevenage manager. “He’s the best of all time for me.”

“I didn’t really see Pele play, and Diego Maradona was special, but in my opinion Messi is even better. And, perhaps, has his head screwed on a bit better.”

The now 51-year-old joined West Ham in the latter stages of his career back in 2004, going on to make 87 appearances and score 30 times in Claret and Blue.
