On this day 122 years ago, Thames Ironworks FC were formed.
The former working mens, industrial style social club, comprised of football enthusiastic workers from the Victoria Dock Road, would later go on to become West Ham United.
Formed by Arnold Hills, owner of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, and foreman Dave Taylor in 1895, the club would run for five years, picking up two league titles along the way while playing most of it’s football at the Memorial Grounds, which were paid for by Arnold himself.
1990 was the year TIWFC disbanded, but only a few days later reformed as the club we support today.
A commemorative kit, designed in the style of the original TIWFC was worn by the current crop of players at the start of last season in a pre-season fixture against Juventus after their completed move to the London Stadium. It was and is, the only time the kit was/will be worn as an ode to the original ‘Irons’ and the club’s foundations.
Many West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to wish their club a very Happy Birthday. Here are some of the best.
