West Ham manager Slaven Bilic is expecting his players to maintain a sizeable gap to the bottom three for the rest of the season after the weekend victory against Swansea City.

Five defeats in a row meant Bilic’s side had slipped back into a relegation battle they thought they had escaped from, but speaking to the club’s official website, the West Ham boss says he expects his players to show the same application and approach in their next match against Sunderland:

“We made a gap six games ago. Suddenly in no time, we had five defeats and there was no gap that we want. Now, we don’t want that situation to come again. We need to do everything we can and put it in like we did on Saturday. From today, we start the big preparation for the Sunderland game.”

The Hammers are just a point off the top ten despite their poor recent form. They currently sit 14th in the Premier League but are among four clubs on 36 points with Watford sitting tenth on 37.

Sunderland are not looking like a team that will escape relegation this season, and look doomed to their fate, but West Ham’s poor displays in recent games means that, despite Saturday’s win against Swansea, no match should be taken for granted.
