West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang has described how it feels to score his first goal in a Hammers shirt. The Spaniard netted at the end of the first half against Southampton on Saturday to help his side to a 3-1 victory.

The 24 year old devoted his goal to his new born son, but he also said he was decisive in front of goal after previously opting to cross in a similar position. He told West Ham’s official website:

“One time before, the same ball arrived and I tried to cross. When it came to me again I thought ‘it’s your time’. If I score, then ok, and if not, no worries. This time I scored!”

“It was important for us to go in front at that stage. We started the game well, but they scored quickly and we needed to recover. We did that, and then after my goal we had a really nice game.”

Obiang has now established himself as a first team regular with the Hammers. He has started 23 times in all competitions so far this campaign, and has replaced Cheikhou Kouyate alongside Mark Noble for the most part.

The Senegalese international has either moved back into the backline or been absent from the side due to the African Cup of Nations. The 27 year old actually played at right back against Southampton on Saturday as Obiang kept his place in midfield.
