West Ham manager Slaven Bilic says he was delighted by winger Robert Snodgrass’s work rate against Southampton in the 3-1 win at St Mary’s at the weekend.

The Hammers had to come from 1-0 down to beat the Saints after new signing Manolo Gabbiadini scored on his debut before goals from Andy Carroll, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble sealed victory. Bilic told the Evening Standard:

“We knew about his left foot, we knew about his vision and his plan in his head to combine with other players and to use space and everything. But the work-rate was amazing. The work-rate was fantastic. From all the players, but if you ask me about him, definitely. When he was alone at front, when we switched to five at the back, he was brilliant.”

Bilic’s side started the match with two up top, with Andy Carroll supported in attack by Michail Antonio but after Manuel Lanzini replaced Carroll ten minutes into the second half, the switch in system required Snodgrass to play out of position.

The winger has not scored or provided an assist for West Ham in his two matches so far for the club but he has settled into life with the Hammers pretty well, and he will be especially pleased about Bilic’s praise after the win against Southampton on Saturday.
