Tottenham have entered the race to sign Inter Milan centre back Andrea Ranocchia, according to the Evening Standard. The Italian is surplus to requirements at the Giuseppe Meazza and has been closely followed by West Ham in recent weeks.

After signing Southampton defender Jose Fonte for £8million on Friday however, it seems unlikely that the Hammers will now make a move for the 28 year old despite Tuttosport saying Ranocchia’s agent was in London to have talks with the London club.

Spurs have emerged as candidates due to the lengthy injury lay-off to first choice centre back Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian will be sidelined for months with an ankle injury and manager Mauricio Pochettino is seeking cover.

Ranocchia is surplus to requirements after falling out of favour at the Italian club this season. The 28 year old has only made nine appearances, and he is also being closely followed by Hull City and Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
