Southampton are eager to beat West Ham to the signature of Juventus striker Simone Zaza, according to reports from The Sun.

The Italy international has been linked with the Hammers of late, with his father, Antonio, having even talked up the east end of London as a potential destination for the silky forward.

However, The Sun claim Southampton are eager to move in for the 25-year-old, with Claude Puel’s men in possession of plenty of cash ahead of the looming transfer deadline.

Indeed, the Saints sold Sadio Mane to Liverpool for £30m+, shipped Victor Wanyama to Spurs in an £11m deal and allowed Graziano Pelle to make a £12m switch to Shandong Luneng, and with Nathan Redmond and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg signed for £11m and £12.8m respectively their biggest deals, the net spend on the south coast is favourable for another addition.

Reports claim that they want Zaza on loan with a view to a permanent transfer, the same deal West Ham have been eyeing.

The former Sassuolo man is valued at £21.5m, but his chances of game time at Juventus for the coming season have been heavily hit by the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain in Turin.
