It was not long ago many were predicting Andy Carroll’s return would be the kick-starter to West Ham’s season.
Early results against Tottenham and Southampton left fans somewhat resigned to the fact it was to be another season of toil until the tall centre forward regained match fitness.
By contrast, the team’s form has seen Carroll’s presence on the bench welcomed as luxury, not a necessity.
Despite not being guaranteed a starting spot, the positive signs are he is prepared to fight for his place. And on the evidence of his three-minute cameo against Aston Villa, the number nine has plenty to offer the squad.
