Big Sam deserves our respect

Sam AllardyceWhat a mess! Five wins in the last eight.! After a victory, Sam Allardyce was booed. After a rather peaceful time to be a West Ham fan. We’re back on the news and in the newspapers.

Don’t forget, a large amount of West Ham fans didn’t want Sam Allardyce from day one. That’s their right. It also means that they are likely to pipe up with their displeasure at any given opportunity. Of course we never know if we are better off under Sam than any other alternative, but promotion in first season and a tenth place finish is far from failure. This season has been rocky so far but it has been for many a side, including Manchester United.

Success is a gradual process. Sam is fulfilling what he has been asked to do. He was appointed by the joint-chairmen and will play whatever way he finds success, which he has done. West Ham need a few seasons, of what could be described as “boring”, to maintain Premier League status. After that is achieved and the move into the OS is completed, then West Ham can look to move on.

Many West Ham fans seem to think that they pay the higher than average prices, so they deserve better. I’m afraid not. A football club is 50% business and 50% entertainment. The prices are high because of the business side. You wouldn’t go to see ballet or opera if you thought that you would get bored. Just because you chose to pay the money doesn’t mean you have customer rights to a refund.

You can voice your displeasure, that’s absolutely fine. But you must appreciate that we don’t need instant glory. Stability is key for now. Big Sam is offering that, and has previously done so with many lower status clubs. The club is turning around and this is all part of the process. To think that Big Sam could have achieved exactly what was asked of him and never be thanked or remembered for it because of the “lack of entertainment”, saddens me.

    Stuff the arrogant fat northerner.
You make it sound like this club will die if he goes.
I have been watching them since 1977, we’ve been down loads of times, and we’ve had some of the best days in the 2nd division.
Stop believing the premier league hype, get more oney in hpremier league to do what?
Pay the players and the manager more money.
Pay agents more money, who are friends of the players and the managers.
All this money we should get in nearly free.
I seem to remenber Padue spening peanuts compared to Allardyce. We went down, he took over re built a team that played with pace and flair. Got us to a cup final and played great attacking football.
    Allardyce has done what?
Wasted millions of pounds = Jarvis £12m, really, Carroll £18m really, Miaga £6m really, this bloke is clueless.
    What is everyone scare about?
Hull played great football with Bruce,Swansea played great footbll, Stoke playd better football, Southampton play great football.
We spent more than all of them, and have a load of players who can’t control a fotball let alone dribble with it. All of Sams players
So tell me again, why he hs done such a great job ?

    • Toby Fry says:

      Hull play great football? Really?

Swansea are really struggling and by no means playing their attractive football of last year.

Are you sure Southampton spent less than us? I’m not so sure.

Also, why isn’t Pardew still our manager if he was so awesome?

      • Dave55 says:

Pardrew lost the dressing room remember the Bentley boys. Shame i think he was our best manager of late imagine if he had the money Sam has had to spend???? Could have been tasty

I have been watching West Ham since the mid sixties, and ive seen some crap even with the Moores ,Peters, and Hursts in the team.Your right some off our best football was when we where in the old 2nd division.
With regards to the players Allardyce has bought in, yes they where for a lot of money, but Sugo payed the money ! they didnt have to pay those amounts ! maybe they should take responsibility for wasted money ? The teams you mentioned- Hull will go down next season, so will Swansea if not this season ? Stoke will never set the world alight, and yes Southampton play great football, but when there manager leaves for a bigger club ( or Spuds) and there best 3 or 4 players leave for top clubs where will they be ?
Allardyce is doing what he does best, getting the best out of of a average squad and whether you like his style or not it will keep us in Prem. until large funds become available for the club to move on !!! If you dont like dont Watch !!!!!

    • JB says:

To Dave. Sam’s done an unbelievably incredible job because West Ham do not have the players they would like to have. We only have 2 international represenative class players in our squad who MAY play at the world cup finals in Brazil this year being Pablo Armero of Comlombia & Guy Demel of Ivory Coast. That’s it, just the 2. Sam has done a really good job of West ham now being mid table with the players he has. Andy Carroll, who we only paid 15 million for, after Liverpool paid 35 million for, has been out injured for most of the season. We’ve had a whole batch of injuries. Look I could go on for ever. If you are not going to get behind your club then put another team’s outfit on & support someone else, but don’t drag us down with your negativity mister

      • AppyAmmer says:

I would like to bring up one point, we do have more internationals than just the 2. Jussi has 56 caps, Winston Reid is New Zealand captain no less, Nocerino has caps for Italy, as does Downing for England, not forgetting Carroll.

With regards to the injuries, which other manager signed a player injured other than Allardyce? The injuries we had, lets look, McCartney, injury prone, Demel same, started season with ONLY 3 centre backs, what!!?? So that means O’Brien can only cover one full back position, why no cover at centre back or full back? He HAS spent alot and poorly, there is no two ways about it.

  • JB says:

Of course Sam deserves our respect. I can’t see anybody else who would have kept this squad up, but most importantly, our players deserve respect. We must return to cheering instead of booing West Ham fans, PLEASE, LETS BE UNITED & CHEER OUR LADS ONTO POINTS TOWARDS EVERY FINAL WHISTLE TILL THIS SEASON’S CLOSE. We just have to beat Sunderland on Monday. Unbelieveably, Palace have just beaten Chelsea 1-0, the relegation zone margin is now 26 pts. The lads will need every bit of support we can muster. If we let Sunderland win then the margin will be 28 pts, that’s just too close for comfort if we are on 34 after this game. We just have to be on 37 after this game. COYI

    • JB says:

Another reason we really have to go flat out for a win at Sunderland, is come next weekend, with Liverpool coming to town. Liverpool will be like a freight train going for the title. There may be no stopping them. We have to win on Monday night because it could be a while until the next points come. We’ve seen the effects on our players nerves from the effects of booing. They need cheering. If we win on Moday then it will not matter so much if we get blown away by Liverpool

      • AppyAmmer says:

LOL with Allardyce managing you really think we will go flat out to win? Based on current form and experience of him, we will go there and play 5-4-1 and play to draw. Like we did V Everton, Aston villa last season, I could go on forever!

        • JB says:

Yes, I know AppyAmmer, but one can live in hope eh? As Sunderland are our main threat. (Indeed they are everyone’s threat from us down to West Brom) We just have to treat Sunderland like the plague tomorrow night & WIPE THEM OUT! Because for all teams from us down to West Brom, that’s what Sunderland have become. The plague. Let’s give Sam & our lads all the respect we can, and just DO IT!!! because yes, it could go on forever, and if it goes on until after 3rd May and with playing City on 11th May, then just forget it. Every one of our last 7 games looks hard from now on, especially with Palace & West Brom now firing. TOMOROW NIGHT’S GAME AT SUNDERLAND LOOKS THE EASIEST OUT OF THE LOT???

          • JB says:

If it’s any consolation AppyAmmer, I been studying Sam’s form, & it is very very consistent. For the entire season, West Ham have never lost more than 4 out of any given 6 sequence of games, so with having lost 3 out of our last 4, then we are due to lose no more than 1 out of the next 2 games, before winning or drawing again, so playing 2 more games will leave, 5 left. The entire season’s form says we will get 2 more wins, or at least 1 more win & a draw.

  • Ken Perry says:

Sam does deserve respect for what he has done. But what many true fans are upset about (forget the boo boy morons) is his stuborness in sticking with players who are out of form and for playing players out of their best position. Diame performs much better in midfield and lousy when stuck on the wing. Jarvis has had only two decent games this season and seems to have lost the pace and skill to beat EPL fullbacks. Taylor is simply not a EPL quality midfielder, has lost what form he had in February but remains a regular pick of Sam. Our most exciting midfielder (Rav) has gone to QPR and will probably go somewhere permanently in the summer. The 3 signings Sam made in January have hardly been seen – how much money has that cost G & S? And one of them (Armero) who has outstanding pace and is a regular international has seen 10 minutes of football. It is all of these things that are frustrating our supporters.

  • Alboy says:

Sam should show some respect to the traditions of our club and fans, instead of being the arrogant, pig headed twat that he is.
He might get some respect back then

  • Jake says:

WHU Have got to break the habit of firing managers at every turn. Over the past ten years we have been thoroughly inconsistent – one good season followed by a poor season – often resulting in relegation – and usually followed by a sacking! Sam’s football might not be the most entertaining, but I settle for a few seasons of consolidation.

  • AppyAmmer says:

Utter tripe. I defended Alladyce when he first got appointed. I defended him when the football wasnt great in our first season and I defended him at the start of the season. Then we re signed Carlton Cole and that made me realise how mis managed the whole thing is, its a shambles. Oh and by the way, I am a fan of Carlton so dont think I am having a pop because we resigned him.

He JUST got us up in his first season despite having a large budget and wage budget, well done to him, but my word did we have to put up some boring games.

first season up, we had to put up with some awful games, but tolerated it, and we spent a fair amount on players. Then this year was a disaster and it boils down to a shocking summer of transfers.

The blame lays with Allardyce and his lack of flexibility tactically. We are so predictable right now its a nonsense, but does he make any changes? No he carries on playing people out of position and playing players woefully out of form. The fans have a pop, which is there right, what does he do, have a pop, again!

For the money spent he has drastically under performed as a manager and the fans deserve to be entertained. If you go to the opera and they forget there words do you just accept it or complain? If you go to the opera and they forget there words, do you accept it or complain?

It is a two way deal; if you argue that he deserves our respect then it could also be that we deserve his, do we get it? I’m not sure.
We would all love to see attacking football and goals by the shedload
but we would also love to stay in the Premier League and build a good team.
Perhaps the latter is more important till survival is certain , hopefully after Sunderland.

Who will take us to the next stage? Who knows
but look at all those teams who have got rid of FS to play
    attractive football,
where are most of them now, well below where they were when he was there
    THINK ABOUT IT>

2003 We had a talented team and got relegated.
Harry was wonderful till we got Relegated.

Maybe F.S. is a viable option/ We’ll know at the end of the season.
worse off than when Sam arrived.

      • AppyAmmer says:

The argument that teams that sack him always get relegated are symptomatic of the problem, they get relegated because he only buys players that play one way, launch ball. Therefore when someone comes in and tells the players to pass on the ground they cant do it. Also he creates a siege mentality.

  • JMan43 says:

I can’t think of any other manager that has so divided the fan base of this club. I am not a fan, he is arrogant, stubborn, blinkered, negative in how he sets the team up and doesn’t know how to take the game to the opposition. Sure he got us promoted at the first attempt, but only just. With the squad he had we should have won the Championship, not by the skin of our teeth via the Playoffs. I would beg to differ that stability equals flirting with relegation and although I do think we are all but safe but it has been anything but a stable season. If we are to maximise the opportunities the OS will hopefully bring us we cannot have Allardyce at the helm, he is just not attractive enough a proposition.

  • Godba says:

    Toby,what utter party line drivel
This man has been a shambles from day one his painting by numbers approach has him found out.
Karen Bradys waffle today summed up our club “were the experts just pay your money and accept we know what were doing ,your opinion is flawed cos Sam is all knowing”
    Absolute tosh!!!!

  • Hammer64 says:

What Karen Brady knows about football you can write on the back of a stamp, and I don,t think gold and Sullivan are to far behind either tbh, they are just money man and brady is just a mouthpiece and accountant at best,as for Sam,on a hiding from day one in my book,if we want a bloke to keep us in the prem and play boring football, route one, neck in a brace job,Sam is your man,but the majority of our fans want more then that,we want progression and decent football played on the floor with flair and style and get our fans off there seats cheering the quality of our football. We need a manager who has this vision to take us forward and we also need major investment so our manager has the funds to go out and bring the quality players needed so our club can move forward with the football our fans crave and desire and also get a step closer to our dream of European football in the OS.

  • Los Matillos says:

Hammer64 and Toby Fry – what drivel. We had big money investors ( Icelandic!) and look where that got us. Instead of just going on about the kind of football you want and all that is wrong with the status quo, tell us how much you have invested in club shares and which manager you want! The club would be in administration now if it wasn’t the David’s and Sam did get us promoted and has kept us in the Premier. Also most of the time the team plays with guts and determination which used to be a rarity ( which is why players like Julian Dicks and Frank McAvennie stood out like a beacon) . We had the worst run of injuries in the division before Xmas and that killed the players confidence – before that we were playing some good football. But you dreamers seem to leave in a fantasy world waiting for the likes of Messi & co to join us overnight. By the way if we played that boring Spanish style I’d swap to netball – champions league match they played 34 mins sideways and backwards before they had a shot at goal! Look at their results when Messi doesn’t play!

    • The Cat says:

      Los Matillos……..SPOT ON!

As well having some of the most knowledgeable supporters in the country, we have our fair share of numpties who have the memories of goldfish and football knowledge that you could put on the back of a postage stamp with room to spare!
It’s almost as if they’ve forgotten the near extinction of the club by financial incompetence and the IMMEDIATE promotion by Big Sam after relegation & exodus of players. The record of clubs returning to the premiership immediately after relegation is poor to say the least and second season survival has always been hard but it now looks like we have achieved it. People also forget the type of players Big Sam wanted & tried to get to the club pre-season, but footballs about money & mercenaries these days.
The cockroaches are sparse today after our fantastic win last night…..surprise surprise. I thought the spuds had the most impatient & corrosive supporters in the land, but a few of our own could give them a run for their money.

Still some supporters fail to understand that with STABILITY comes success!!!

      Unbelievable!

  • Hammer64 says:

Los Matillos you talk such crap iam not even going to respond, you ain,t got a clue mate,i would tell you what meant by my comments but you are to stupid to understand,LOL

  • Spence55 says:

Respect Toby !!!! The bloke was hounded out of Newcastle and Blackburn because the fans HATED his (lack of) style of football and still do. He is so one dimensional its now actually beyond a joke. His lack of understanding in how to play against ten men at home against a fellow struggler in Hull told me EVERYTHING I needed to know about his lack of know how and ability to read a game and to respond to changing game situations. Having spent the best part of fifty years giving every ounce of support possible to West Ham, through thick but mainly thin,I feel no compunction in letting management know that I am not getting value for money.
