The looming threat of relegation grows larger and larger, half the season has now come and gone and we’ve only tasted sweet victory on a meagre three occasions. Now what’s really scary is that in the 2nd half of the season we’re going to have to win roughly triple the amount of games accrued in the first half to have any chance of remaining amongst the elite.
The upcoming transfer window is going to be the most crucial the club has ever known, relegation is unthinkable with the impending move to Stratford, the first game at the Olympic Stadium needs to be a Premier League one, if it isn’t then the stadium could be the death of West Ham and not the platform to propel us on from perennial relegation fights to fighting for European spots.
The last time we were relegated from the top flight under Avram Grant; David Gold and David Sullivan brought in Demba Ba and Robbie Keane in the January transfer window in an effort to blast our way out of trouble…it ultimately didn’t work, even with on paper a fearsome looking strike-force our defensive frailties ended up costing us; most memorably against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium in the game that saw our relegation confirmed in the most ‘typical West Ham’ fashion possible…I just hope history isn’t about to repeat itself.
So with half the season gone and with only three wins to show for it; what evidence is there to suggest that in the 2nd half of the campaign we can triple the amount of wins? Unfortunately very little, the owners will predictably chuck cash at the situation and that may help, we will get our key injured trio back in Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing and Winston Reid and that will certainly help but can we honestly win 8/9 of the remaining 19 games? I’m not convinced.
The threat of relegation is real and at this moment in time we’re nailed on. If by some miracle we survive this season serious questions need to be asked about the manager and the quality of this squad…if we go down then one can’t help but feel the decision to move to the Olympic Stadium could rather ironically destroy this great club.

Not the quality of the squad. Lack of strikers is the main issue. We have had as many clean sheets as Everton and more than Arsenal this season. Splashing over 20m on Carroll and Downing was the issue. Players like Lukaku and Hooper were available for less money
