Is he too good for West Ham?

Ravel Morrison celebrating against Norwich CityWe are now all very much aware of Ravel Morrison‘s talent. Quotes from Sir Alex Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher have also expressed the ability of Ravel during his time at Manchester United.

However, is he too good for West Ham?

He certainly owes the resurrection of his career to Sam Allardyce but should Ravel Morrison be showcasing his talents in the Champions League and hunting down Premier League titles anytime soon?

Ravel has been one of few bright sparks so far this season, having scored three Premier League goals so far.

It is obvious that West Ham won’t be fighting for a Premier League title anytime soon. Is Ravel too good for this side? Or does he owe it to the faith showed in him by the club, to remain with the club and make himself a club legend, like many greats before him.

Selfishly, I would relish in having a player of Morrison’s immense quality in our squad and if he can get into England’s senior team whilst with us, then there’s no harm done there. However, my head says that his ability deserves to be on the absolute top stage. But then again, West Ham know how Ravel works, and have managed to produce a support system that is allowing him to flourish. He could easily disappear into obscurity, if he were to leave.

For the foreseeable future, he will certainly remain a Hammer. But what do you feel is the long-term future of Ravel Morrison?

West Ham hero or trophy hunter?

No player is bigger than a club, especially with the history and tradition at West Ham.

    • Toby Fry says:

They are regularly bigger in the sense that their ambitions far out stretch what their current club can offer, that’s the point.

  • Legends says:

daft article. he’s no where near the finished product. sometimes he struts around ignoring the donkey work. which says to me he’s still arrogant and still has an attitude. … the spat with Zaha for England U21s is perfect evidence.
IF he has a great season and knocks in 10 goals+ then this article may have sense. otherwise it’s way too premature.

    • Toby Fry says:

Rooney still has an attitude. What about it?

Already on 5 goals this season. How daft to call it premature. Everyone knows how good he is and has been for years now. He’s no Zavon Hines.

  • Trevor says:

Was Bobby Moore too big for West Ham? No. Hurst? Peters? Brooking? Di Canio? Absolutely not. Stupid bloody question. I hate forums like this…..and Talk Sport radio station, which is full of the same shit.

    • Toby Fry says:

Completely different ball game back in Moores day. And different West Ham.

di Canio could have gone United (bigger than West Ham). Deal agreed but his agent was too greedy so he stayed. He was arguably too good for West Ham as he could have won trophies if the deal went through as agreed to Manchester United.

  • safhammer says:

Good enough for West Ham, me thinks.

  • teddybard says:

could do with a few more to back him up

  • dreamer says:

Hes no lionel messi, but people are assuming he will will end up playing for a”bigger club”.We all knew tevez was a short term loan, dont recall west ham fans saying he was too good to play for us,and i dont like hear statements like that-we have had plenty signings that have not been good enough to play for us.

  • tony mathews says:

What an idiotic comment, west ham united world renowned for the quality of both their football ethics and for the academy !!!
Ravel Morrison is a fine player but has achieved nothing as yet and has proven his worth over just a few games.
Prior to West Ham he was a handfull of aggravation to what ever club he was at, even Fergie couldnt handle him…..i say well done Big Sam and West Ham for taking the time to nurture this young footballer into what he is beginning to become.
West Ham are lined up for big things in the near future and he has a bright future with them.

TOO GOOD FOR WEST HAM MY BACKSIDE !!!!!!!!

    • Toby Fry says:

      Did you read the article?

Didn’t say right now. But his potential is greater than the clubs. Simple.

  • tony mathews says:

Really ?? and how deep is your understanding of the clubs ambitions……do you not think that poaching one of Arsenals greatest backroom assets and a move to the olympic stadium shows a trickle of ambition ???
Success is not an overnight thing and if you really look at what the club is trying to achieve at the moment you will smell ambition see investment and improvement.
Granted quite a few mistakes are being made but you cant make an omlette without breaking eggs.
As for did i read comment of course i did hence my reply, how can you ask if he may be too good for west ham in the future.
Nobody knows how good or bad he will be in the future or where west ham will be !!!

Positive breeds positive but negative does the same, i prefer my glass half full, it would appear that yours is half empty !!!

His potential is greater than the clubs Wow !!! You have an incredible depth of knowledge regarding the clubs direction !!! You must be right !

Where there does it say I think Ravel is defiantly too big for West Ham? Most of the article is questions.

Abuse is a bit unnecessary. Leyton Orient tried for the OS too don’t forget so is their ambition the same as Ravel’s? We’re lucky to have a free stadium locally. Done well to win it, but doesn’t define ambition. Defines business people making money.

  • 2stops says:

Is he too big a talent for West Ham, No. Will his ambition get the better of him Yes so he will go the way of all the other talent we have let go. If we could get back all the current Premier league players that have played for WHUFC we would not only have the only English team of players but we might actually win something. And that will be the key to holding onto Ravel and also Carroll and the other youth players coming through. Success breeds success and that make players want to play for a club.

  • Niggle says:

What total rubbish. We have had and will have good and better than him. We can keep players but need to raise our quality to attract more players like we had before. The owners in going for the better stadium are raising the bar. This poor attitude will drag us down.

  • dreamer says:

Mr fry,as you can see from the above comments, the headline on this post has rattled a few of us-i ask you this-you state that you would relish having a player of morrisons talent in your teams squad, who do you support ?

  • Alan G says:

That’s exactly the kind of thinking that has left us where we are today. Why should he be “too good for us”? Surely the challenge to West Ham should be to improve themselves to make the most of his talents… If you do believe that statement however, then don’t complain when we never amount to anything more than a lower tier Premiership side…

  • Phil the iron says:

Wasn’t going to give this piece of shite the oxygen it needs by dignifying it with an answer but I am so angry I feel moved to say, f$€k off and take this shite with you! You are no west ham fan writing rubbish like this and there for don’t deserve to appear on any irons websites! Leave such forums to true supporters who loyally back their team thru thick and thin! COYI!

  • John Barry says:

Nobody’s too good for West Ham. Were Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst & Martin Peters too Good? Never. No one can be too good, it’s more like if Ravel is good enough, he’ll get into the team and with just 8 games to go until the mid-season stage, West Ham are a long way short of the haul they achieved last year after 19 games, being a target of 23 points. In fact we are 8 points short of the 18 we had won after the first 11 games of last season. How many points out of the next 24 do you think West Ham will get? At least 4 wins & a draw would be great, with wins at home on 30th Nov to Fulham, away on 3rd Dec to Crystal Palace, at home on 14th Dec to Sunderland & at home to West Brom on 28th Dec are all possible with maybe a draw in the other London derby at home to Arsenal on 26th Dec, is really all West Ham can seriously hope to achieve totaling the 13pts & matching last season’s mid season haul of 23 points, but their current form does not display that this can happen. The home games v Chelsea and Arsenal are a big ask, along with away games at Liverpool & Man Utd, but the season can take an upturn with a win at home against Chelsea, as a further 16 points gained for a total of 26pts will then be possible before the New Year, but if West Ham get zero points from Saturday’s game at home to Chelsea, then the pressure will really be on for the home game on the following Saturday against Fulham, even at this early stage in the season. I hope I am wrong?

  • John Barry says:

And don’t you dare start saying is he too good until he starts averaging a goal a game as the great Greavsy did in his career. Is he good enough for the club that won the FIFA world cup? Bobby Charlton said that Bobby Moore was the greatest player he had ever played alongside. Ravel Morrison has a long way to go before he receives those sorts of accolades

    • Toby Fry says:

I’m not sure you understand the current football market. West Ham can’t just hold on to every player, nor will they want to if big offers were to possibly come in. You think the businessman running the club will turn down making a bucket load on a free transfer?

Stop living in the 1960’s. We’ll see.

      • dreamer says:

I think that if morrison turns out to be the player some of us think he will be,then it will not matter if he wants to stay at west ham for the rest of his footballing life, because like you mentioned-sam or who ever would do the same as spurs did with bale-but its premature to suggest morrison could be a glory hunter, and he is not a west ham legend-yet.

        • Toby Fry says:

I meant trophy hunter loosely, not as in a traditional glory hunter. But that he will join a trophy winning club.

  • The Cat says:

It’s amazing how a few bad regular posters can turn, what is meant to be a supporters into a site to be avoided by TRUE supporters.
A fine example of poor subject research and execution. If I blurted out every thought that came into my head without thinking them through, I’d end up locked up.

    • Toby Fry says:

Explain yourself a bit better then. Let’s hear your problems. Maybe over twitter as it’s easier. @TheTobyFry to find me.

  • Suffolkhammer says:

Top talent, lets just enjoy him. If we can put a side together to be back in top 10 theres every chance he will be with us. He is young he is learning and he is playing regularly, that might not happen elsewhere. Two questions tho, 1 If Carroll had not been injured woukd we even be seeing Ravel? 2 Were England crying out for someone who can play with and keep the ball like Ravel on Friday?

  • John Barry says:

Look the 2 Davids have stated that West ham is no longer a “selling club” oh & as for living in the 60s that you state I am living in, well West Ham have been selling players all through the decades either because players wanted to be in a more successful team or the offers were too good for the club to refuse, but if those players had stuck around they would have made the club more successful without having to move. It makes good business sense to hang onto your greatest assets, as Liverpool have done with Suarez & now they are powering. Just taking a short term sell out is very negative with a short term monetary gain while the club slides down the table &/or possibly drops a division because the best palyers have gone, which in the long term makes a huge loss of revenue for the club. It’s really up to Morrison at the end of the day. Sam has saved him from possible oblivion, maybe him can return the favour and help take West Ham up the table. The old me me me attitude has been around in players for too long now. We can live in hope of values changing back to the better, i.e. people building things instead of short term gain. Oh and also, a club who only rents it’s stadium owns nothing & could eventually become nothing if it does not demand a deal that includes ownership of the Olympic stadium, otherwise why sell the Boleyn ground and own NOTHING!!!
