One of the best ever?

West Ham players celebratingBeing a 29-year-old supporting Hammer means it wasn’t until around 1990 that I can remember any games. However, I think Sunday’s result for Sam Allardyce and West Ham United ranks as one of my best memories.

There have been some superb standout performances and famous victories over the last couple of decades. A win at Spurs in 1994 when we beat them 4-1 at White Hart Lane, a 3-2 victory at Stamford Bridge in 2003 when Paolo Di Canio scored a sublime double, one a volley from the edge of the box. Victories at Old Trafford, Highbury and the Emirates are all considered too, but for me, the win at Spurs on Sunday is my all-time favourite.

There are many reasons behind this. First of all, when we beat Spurs in 1994, they did not have £100m worth of talent at their disposal. Roberto Soldado, Christian Erikson, Jan Vertonghen, Paulinho, Erik Lamela, Hugo Lloris – the list goes on. But West Ham made these players, some of Europe’s best, look average. Our defence was made up of three free transfers, an Academy product, and a Kiwi! But those players showed what you can do with the right mental attitude.

Our midfield made up of a Manchester United reject, another Academy product, a free transfer, and a player who Newcastle United thought was past his best. Finally, we had a player who was picked up for £500k from Barnsley, and Stewart Downing, a player, who at £6m, doesn’t even dent any of the transfer fees paid by Spurs.

Secondly, our form going into the game had even the most optimistic of West Ham fans looking precariously at the bottom 3. We thought we couldn’t score goals, we thought we couldn’t win away, and I think most of us were expecting a bit of damage limitation.

Finally, I’m happy for our away support. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position whereby I can go to West Hams home matches, let alone the away ones. But I know our loyal supporters deserved this, not only for the performance, but to celebrate against those arrogant Spurs supporters, in their own backyard. That win, was for you……

COME ON YOU IRONS!!

Yeah have it yids. I had to sit in with them at shite hart lane about 3 years ago. They done us 3 nil. I hated every second of that match/experience. How I wish I was in that same seat on Sunday.

Can’t believe you lot are still going on about beating Spurs, so funny. God forbid what it would be like if you actually won a trophy… You do realise from a neutral point of view your portraying your club as a small club mentality. Does this mean your season is over now you won one game against Spurs? Lol

Manc, thanks for the naïve and uneducated comment. A derby game is big for any club. Against one of our most hated rivals that have just spent a large fortune (over 100 mill) on reshaping their team, we looked brilliant. Can any fan celebrate a genius game from the team they love without a knucklehead like you showing up with your stupid moronic statement.

Can’t wait to turn you and your pathetic red devils over at old trafford so we can stick the boot up your….

Can’t wait to get Andy Caroll back. That’s when the fun will really begin for us. I predict an easy top ten finish and a cup run. It wasn’t so long ago we almost beat Liverpool in the FA Cup.

    Come on you Irons!!!

Good article Chelmo, I was lucky enough to be there Sunday, sitting in the Spurs section nearest to the Hammers fans. Forget the team for a minute, our support was f***ing AWESOME! The Spurs fans around me could not believe how passionate, loud and witty (yes, witty) we were for the whole game. They were no match for us on or off the pitch.
I was lucky enough to be there in 1981 when we went to White Hart Lane for our first away match of the season. Spurs were parading the FA Cup and opening their new stand. We all know or work with Spurs fans who thought they only had to turn up Sunday to thrash us and it was the same back in 1981. We stuffed them 0-4 and David ‘Psycho” Cross scored all 4 goals, a night any Hammer that was there will ever forget especially as there were around 7,000 of us there to celebrate. COYI

Absolutely. This game was certainly one of the best ever. beating Tottscum at White Hart Lane by a score of 3-0 is brilliant. After the scum have spent over 100 mill on players over the summer, priceless.
