Can West Ham learn a few things from Norwich City?

Martin OlssonSome of the best transfer deals done, so far in this window, have been pulled off by Norwich City. The recent signings of Martin Olsson and Nathan Redmond, show that the Canaries mean business for the upcoming season. At one point West Ham were linked with both players and I remained optimistic that we could sign both of them at some point.

Olsson and Redmond are still very young and have years ahead of them in the game. Redmond has obtained many admirers over the last couple of seasons and can switch from either wing (an area we are currently weak in); as for Olsson. it appeared that a deal could be struck in the January transfer window but a fee wasn’t agreed, playing as a left back he could of provided competition/cover for newly signed Ravzan Rat.

Realistically we are not the richest club and we can’t sign every player the press links us to, but I think that Norwich have pulled off a couple of great transfers here, I hadn’t expected Norwich to be fierce competition but with their current signings Olsson, Redmond and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel how much of a threat could the 3 prove to be?

Although we have signed some decent players I feel that we often get ripped off, over £10 million paid for Matt Jarvis is a prime example of that, and considering Norwich paid £2 million for Redmond.

Could we learn a thing or two from Norwich on transfer dealings?

I am relatively happy with the squad – and don’t forget having Diarra and Morrison back with the right attitude is like 2 brilliant new signings – but like you I can’t help getting slightly peeved when you see other clubs getting players we supposedly showed interest in too. If I had my way we would always go for the upcoming talent like Redmond, Ince. Rhodes, Clyne, Zaha, Moses, Solly, etc etc. but Sam prefers solid professionals with experience and I don’t think he will change. However, when we then go for untested South Americans I do despair. To me they are a far greater risk than an outstanding Uk talent from the Championship.

  • ian says:

well lets put it this way….they signed
    a quality left back
    a future england international winger
    a dutch international midfielder
    a centre forward
the oldest of which is 24 years of age and all for the same price we payed for andy carroll, and there combined wages is probably less than carrolls.
now if van wolfswinkle scores as many goals as ac this season then they the other signings all becoe bonus’s-and assive ones at that

  • Mike says:

They also signed leroy fer another good young player

  • Dazza p says:

    We need strikers badly

  • Graham says:

Young players, no matter how much potential they have, do not bring consistency. With our up coming stadium move on the horizon, experience can bring us stability for a few years. Then once the move is done and the debts significantly reduced, we can add youth to the experience and start to move forwards. We already have some of our own young players around the first team this pre-season. Potts, Morrison, legett, moncur. To many youngsters and we’d be battleing relegation, just like villa were last season.

    COYI

    GUYS ….Your seeing this wrong
    asprilla was an unknown colombian

i dont think players in the championship are any better than the players in our team seb leglet and morrison have both been told make it count upfield

im glad we got AC rather than zigic or crouch

  • jay says:

Heres the problem with our football club

    Stupid tactics its that simple

if we defending a corner every man is back so when its cleared it comes straight back

if we had two players up front on defensive corners then teams would need to leave 3 defenders back giving us the advantage

  • chris says:

I’m fairly happy with the current squad though we definitely need another striker before the season starts

Who is the “Dutch International midfielder” that we’ve signed?

    We’ve also signed another goalkeeper!

    • Jamal says:

He was talking about Norwich. Do you honestly expect us to show any ambition in the transfer market?

  • bob says:

    Moan moan moan moan

  • The Cat says:

I’m not sure people understand the difference between “potential” and “proven” quality. Gambling or taking a chance with POTENTIAL might work…..but it could fail, and relegation is NOT an option. PROVEN, ensures quality in level of performance. Truth is we’re on a different level to Norwich and I wouldn’t swap squads with them for all the tea in China.

I’ve been aware of Seb Lleglet for some time and his performance at Bournemouth was outstanding. Our youngsters are good enough I expect them to come through. As supporters I think the future looks very bright for the next generation of youngsters coming through.

Many supporters wrongly have the perception that Big Sam is against youth, but his record elsewhere says different. He has had to start from ground zero when he came to the club, as there was no path to the first team for the younger players put in place. He immediately started to loan out the young players so that they could get first team experience. Many of the youngsters that have left, have left of their own accord and were not pushed out of the club. So far none of these youngsters have proved that they were good enough to have been first team regulars. But some supporters would have liked the club to gamble all the same.

    • ian says:

well in that case lets blow our budget on a centre forward whos scores 10 goals in 2 and a half season…..oh wait
      so whats PROVEN there?
      like i said norwich bought
a quality left back thats proven in the epl
a young up and coming midfielder who if he lives uto his potential will be worth 20mill in a coule of years
      a prove dutch international midfielder
a proven dutch international striker who has scored heaps of goals in every leage he has been in.
all this cost hyst 2million more than our ‘PROVEN’ 10 goals every 2 and half season striker.
thats 7 less than peter crouch has in 2 seasons-and would i want crouch?????errrr no.
thats also less than kevin doyle in 1 season-who btw could be available for as littles as 3mill.would i want him to start?no,but a decent back up?hell yeah.
but the gollivans have already said they want to make 1 huge splash every summer-kind of a poverty strikken version of real madrids ‘galacticos’ and that never worked out very well did it?

      • The Cat says:

Well ian you seem to know more than our current manager so maybe you should personally advise him.

Trouble is, we have so many supporters that know it all and what we should be doing and when….. but simply can’t see the wood for the tree’s, a short hop and I reckon you’ll look quite good in Canary Yellow & Green.

I’ll see you at the end of the season to see who’s right or wrong ian.

        • ian says:

the stats sure as hell do not lie.10 goals in 2 and a half season.and im still awaiting the explanation of proven players?
the striker with the above record?
the 30 odd year left back whos never played in the epl?
or the spanish keeper whos had 1 season as a starter in the spanish league?
see to me the only (and as you put it) PROVEN layer there is andy carroll and all he proved is that he aint that prolific.
i sure as hell hope im wrong, but if im not, theres always wigan for 20quid a ticket again the season after, althogugh maybe its down to a tenner in the championship, plus bolton, birmingham, wolves should be back up and a heck of alo more championship teams around where i live thatll be nice trips for the away games

          • The Cat says:

My guess is that you’ll be proved wrong. I’ve been hearing the same sort of thing for the last three years but we have improved year on year.
Maybe……just maybe, we have a manager who knows what he’s doing.

As I said I’ll see you at the end of the season, and I’m CONFIDENT!

    • FishtheFishFish says:

“Truth is we’re on a different level to Norwich and I wouldn’t swap squads with them for all the tea in China.”

Interesting statement… with the signings Norwich have made, I imagine most city fans would not swap squads with West Ham

    • Gggggggg says:

      A lower level than norwich!!!!

  • Bavon says:

@Cat Ok I get the proven vs potential argument but there’s also journeyman vs hungry. Just ask QPR fans. Trying not to be too blinkered for a second why do you think we’re on a ‘completely different level’ to Norwich? We’re going to be fighting for the same area of the league. Just about the only draw we have over them is we’re not stuck in Norfolk….

    • Yellow Hammer says:

Norfolk is glorious, I should know I was brought up there.

      Quality lifestyle all-round.

They have done well in the market and should established themselves this season, but they will finish under us.

    • The Cat says:

If you think Norwich & West Ham United are on the same level then I don’t think we have much in common. It’s like talking about Man United and West Ham United as being on the same level……..there is a difference! Even though we play in the same division.

This club is building to be on a par with clubs in the top six or seven, hence the OS.

      Simples!

  • City boo says:

Ha you west spam supports are so funny, carol only works at small clubs so he will do well with you. enjoy the struggle of the second season as we push on to Europe enjoy fighting it out with crystal palace. I will bet you all £50 that norwich not only beat you twice next season but will finish above you
    On the ball city

    • Hammerman says:

I think The Norfolk Turkeys have just proved that a decent Manager & Well run football club can attract decent players.
I would’ve loved to see every player they’ve signed come to us Wolfwinkel whatever is name is a Dutch international, Fer also a Dutch international, Redmond a future Dutch international and also heard they made a 10mil bid for a Juventus forward and yes we are talking about Little old Norwich.

  • Yellow Hammer says:

It was a decent discussion ’til the canary butted in.

Well, chirpy you made a few claims there but you didn’t back them up with solid reasons.

Anybody can spout off unrealistic predictions.

  • Canary says:

Not going to spout off guys, don’t worry! It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Norwich fan at the moment, we are seeing some great investment in the team this summer. Having said that, it was desperately needed! Although solid (ish) at the back last season we lacked invention going forward. With Hughton’s style of conservative football you need a better quality of attacking player due to the fewer attacks we make when compared to Lamberts style of football. We aren’t the finished article at all yet, we still need another striker and an attacking midfielder who carries more of a goal threat than Hoolahan. Anyway, we’re not going to walk up the league but now that we’re debt free we can feel a little more optimistic! Always thought of West Ham as a strong team, particularly at home, so im sure we’ll have more close games against you next season. On the ball City

  • NorwichBoy says:

Norwich fan here, please ignore the imbecile above, we haven’t completely eradicated incest in some of the most excluded areas of Norfolk (those without a bus service). Unfortunately they now have an internet connection it seems.

We are feeling equally optimistic about our transfer dealings but still have someway to go yet. We have been left with two strikers for example, we desperately need a striker, and we don’t have somebody like Kevin Nolan scoring goals from midfield and that’s something missing from Hoolahan’s game.

Not sure that I agree that West Ham are any stronger than us, expect us to be challenging around the same part of the league, and with a bit of luck that will see us both in the top half of the table. Although, we do need that striker. Ultimately, we are debt free, and we didn’t spend our entire budget last season. That’s some seriously good financial management from our board, it means that we can seriously invest this season. You lot are still crippled by your legacy debts, but I guess your new stadium will go some way towards helping you get out of that situation.

There are three or four West Ham players that would walk into our team. Nolan, Carroll, and Diame in particular. By the same stretch though, I think Ruddy and Bassong would walk into yours, so would Snodgrass judging my Jarvis’s lack of impact last year. Remains to be seen whether Fer and Van Wolfswinkel can be added to that list, but they are Dutch internationals so one would expect so. Don’t mind that James Tomkins either, would perhaps be a good partner for Bassong.

I quite like West Ham by the way. Primarily because you are hated by a few London teams that I also hate, but also because Greeno and Ashton went on to play for you. Ashton was something really special, and only Crewe, Norwich, and West Ham fans appreciate just how good he really was….. would have been the next Alan Shearer. Cheers.

  • Yellllow says:

    Hi Guys,

    Norwich fan in peace.

Firstly, ignore the comment from ‘City boo’. All clubs have their embarrassing idiots…..

A couple of you have hit the nail on the head. We’re a well run club, with a good manager and obviously have ambition (hopefully to be more than just another mid-table also-ran) which has enabled us to attract, and hopefully will continue to attract, the players we have in this transfer window.

Without begin big-headed I think a lot of clubs could follow our example (and Swansea’s to be fair). It’s taken us a long while to get here, but our clubs is now externally debt-free and run in a sustainable manner.

Most of us fans know that for the caliber of player we’re now signing we’re a stepping-stone, but on their route to the top they should help City continue to advance.

As for West Ham and could you learn from us, who knows. Financial management is a big issue for a lot of clubs around our size. Look at Portsmouth as a fine example of things going horribly, horribly wrong.

Whilst I wouldn’t have many concerns if I was a West Ham fan, I would be worried about essentially mortgaging future TV rights to consolidate debt. If those TV rights dry-up (due to relegation, for example) you’re screwed.

Squad-wise I think we’re pretty even. You’ve got some players I would take in a heartbeat (Nolan, Carroll – minus the wages 😉 ) but I’m sure you would agree that in Ruddy, Bassong, Fer and Pilkington (when fit) we’ve got some pretty decent players ourselves. RVW is unproven in the Premier League of course, but he could very well turn out to be this season’s Michu.

Anyway – bit of a long post. Got a bit of a soft-spot for West Ham – my great Uncle grew up near Upton Park. I would often tell him how Norwich were doing and he would reply: “What you watching that rubbish for, you wanna watch West Ham”.

Best of luck for the season (expect when playing us, of course). I’m sure you’ll be comfortably safe.

    • Yellowtilidie says:

What i find hilarious is that Wet Spam fans think they are a massive club – you are similar size to us and we are a well run business so we now can spend more on players and we are buying better players than you – give me Van Wolfswinkle over Carroll every day of the week. I’m embarrassed by our ‘little Norwich’ fans who’ve come on here to suck up to you. We are Norwich we are Premier league and we should lord it over other teams who think there better than us simply cos they happen to play in London (even though all there supporters live in Essex anyway)

  • Canary says:

There’s a difference between sucking up and trying to have a decent discussion about football. I love my club but I respect other fans and enjoy talking to other people about their club. But that’s just me.

  • Irons says:

West Ham > Norwich . Simple mate.

  • jay says:

I know one thing for sure westham are going in the right direction
Lets talk proven freddie ljungberg it doesnt always work i probably could name more but u get my point i just feel we missing a few players but will have a great season top 6

  • jay says:

All we can learn from norwich is they saving cash for when they end up back in the championship
