Costel PantimilionAfter a grandstand victory over West Bromwich Albion at the weekend gave West Ham United a giant leap towards safety, West Ham United can look towards another year in the Premier League.

As we head towards the summer, we head towards the transfer rumours and one such rumour is that of West Ham United are looking to bring in a goalkeeper. There have been doubts over Stephen Henderson’s time at the club since January when he was used as leverage to try and bring Paul Robinson in from Blackburn Rovers. Our other goalkeeper, Jussi Jaaskelainen is now at the age of 37 and will be 38 by the time we play Wigan Athletic this month, so there is plenty to ponder for Sam Allardyce.

A name that is being rumored is the approach for Costel Pantillimon, who is the reserve goalkeeper at Manchester City, and with the form of Joe Hart, it is unlikely that he will overtake the undisputed England number one. So could he be a signing that West Ham United could make to conclude the doubt over the position is Costel Pantillimon. The Romanian signed for Manchester City after a rather stunning display in the Europa League against Manchester City. City signed him on loan and then they paid for him for a fee in the region of three million pounds. Though, since he has joined the club he has been strictly a cup goalkeeper and has yet to make a Premier League start for Manchester City.

I am always interested when we are linked with goalkeepers because I am one who holds a distinct belief. My belief is that you sign a goalkeeper who is in his stages of infancy and then groom him into the player you are looking for, or you sign an older goalkeeper who will play one year, maybe two years. This is because; in particular for a reserve goalkeeper at Manchester City, they are unlikely to bring too much to the club. As much as I like Jussi, I would like the club to sign a big name player. Despite my wishful thinking, I feel much more confident when I know we have a good goalkeeper who is going to be there, going into his prime for a number of years. This is why, despite his talents, I wouldn’t want the club to sign Pantillimon.

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

If I was to pick a realistic name out for us to try and sign, which could be a promising player that could be groomed into a wonderful signing is George Long. At the age of 19, he is quickly becoming one of the most talented goalkeepers in England. Although the only stipulation to this player is that he does currently belong to Sheffield United who might not be willing to sell due to his age, and the fact that the sides share recent tensions. Nevertheless, those events occurred 6 years ago, so Sheffield United may have dropped their bitter views against the club.
