“You’ll never win anything with kids”

|

Saturday marks the weekend where the top flight clubs join in with the FA Cup fever, but do West Ham go for the cup upset against Manchester United or just give their youngsters a chance?

Are you on Facebook? Excellent, so are we http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

With it being just our first season back in the top flight I would prefer us to concentrate on staying up instead of having the distraction of the cup. Many teams have tried to win the cup but have found it hard to balance both their cup run and league form. An example would be the Birmingham City squad of 2011, who won the League Cup in February of that year. They later went on to get relegated along with us in the same season.

It also gives us the chance to show off our talent that we have produced through our academy. The experience the youngsters would get from playing one of the most decorated clubs in English football would be a great boost. Due to injury as well, we have seen the emergence of George Moncur, Jordan Spence, Sebastian Lletget & Elliot Lee come from the development squad to the bench. With only Spence getting 4 substitute appearances this season.

It would be nice to see a lot of our youngsters start the game as I believe that our reputation of being the ‘Academy of Football’ slowly fades. The last person to break through into the first team from our academy is James Tomkins, who made his debut in 2008.

There have been many great prospects to have come from our academy since then but have never been given the chance under our previous managers and moved on to other clubs.

The week off will also give many of our first team players a chance to rest and escape any injuries that could occur during the match. Obviously, many of our players would love to have the chance to play against Man United and also have the chance to play in the cup. But if you were to ask them if they’d prefer to play Man United in the FA Cup as a Premier League team or a Npower Championship team I know which one they’d pick.
