West Ham Defender Splitting Opinion

|

West Ham’s Ivorian right back, Guy Demel is currently receiving mixed opinions from the Hammer’s faithful. Many believe that he is too old, as well as being a poor player, however, others declare him integral in our chances of success in the Premier League this season.

Demel, to me seems like a very good attacking player, however is slightly unreliable at the back, as his communication is rather poor, this has been portrayed numerous times as he clears the ball for a corner despite keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen shouting for the ball.

When attacking, Demel looks very dangerous as he powers down the touchline before whipping in a ball – of which is needed with our aerial dominance.

Currently our team is rather lacking in terms of strength in depth at the back, and we don’t have too may decent, reliable players that can cover injuries, thus making Demel integral. Youngster Jordan Spence, however, proved that he could be called upon when he started against Manchester United last week, and he went on to play very well. With his is mind, we also have Joey O’Brien on our books whom has scored twice this season, the question is whom of these three is most reliable at right back?

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

Demel seems very weak as a defender in all fairness, he occasionally makes mistakes such as knocking the ball out of play when he has time, and he isn’t the most agile of players, and this is such a large weakness when it comes to full backs, simply because in this modern game, wingers are very high in pace and trickery, with the likes of Ashley Young, Valencia, and Theo Walcott.

Despite his weaknesses, Demel is integral to our plans as he does very well overall, his work rate is very good and he always puts in 100%, something us hammer’s adore at Upton Park. West Ham fan Carl Bateson stated that Demel was solid enough, however nothing exceptional (@BatesonCarl). This seems to be the majority of views across the West ham fanbase regarding Demel, with this in mind, maybe we need someone whom is exceptional?

Hopefully, Demel can push and add to his performances both attacking and defensively in order to help us progress in the league. West Ham have been weak at the full back, and winger positions for several years, but Allardyce seems to be changing that with the signings of Matt Jarvis and Joe Cole on the wings, and hopefully, next on his agenda are the full back positions as we haven’t kept a clean sheet for a few games now, and to be fair, this is slightly worrying for a team of our calibre.

What are your views on Guy Demel? And who would you like to see Sam Allardyce bring in during the current transfer window, in terms on full backs?

Do you go to games? Demel has been a strong and consistent performernthis season. The only problem being his poor injury record. I haven’t noticed any great weakness in his defending.

In my opinion, Demel is good enough for the EPL. He’s our third best fullback after O’Brien and McCartney. With McCartney injured, he moves into the starting eleven. While I wouldn’t mind seeing West Ham sign another fullback, I’m happy to have Demel in the team.
