Arsenal vs West Ham Preview

|

West Ham United travel to North London tomorrow night to play their game in hand, unfortunately it is away at the Emirates and against Arsenal. Their last visit to North London wasn’t a great day with a loss to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the season.

West Ham haven’t been on a great run of late. They have only won three times in their last fifteen games with their last victory being a 2-1 win on New Year’s Day against Norwich City. The club currently sit 12th in the league and eight points clear of the relegation zone. The majority of West Ham fans would have taken that at the beginning of the season but I feel many of them are getting quite worried about where the goals are going to come from with Kevin Nolan not scoring since the away win at Newcastle United in November.

West Ham go into this midweek clash after a 1-1 draw at home to QPR. That doesn’t sound like a great result, and it’s not, but the performance was better than what the actual final score shows. If it wasn’t for a great performance from QPR keeper Julio Cesar West Ham could have won 3 or 4 -1. They should go into this game full of confidence and feel they can get a result there. West Ham have played well against all of the ‘big’ teams in the Premier League this season, so they are definitely capable to get at a least point against Arsenal.

Arsenal will want to bounce back from their loss at the weekend against Chelsea. The Gunners lost 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. They were really poor in the first half and were 2-0 down very early on. They came out better in the second half and probably deserved to get a draw from the game.

West Ham will have to be very careful with how they deal with Theo Walcott. He has been given the new role as the main striker at the club and has been rewarding them with goals. I have always said he is a striker and with his pace he is always able to create chances for himself and get behind the back four. I don’t think West Ham can afford to play the offside trap against him because they have been caught behind many times this season and this showed with Loic Remy’s goal against them on Saturday.

In the reverse tie earlier in the season Arsenal came out 3-1 winners. West Ham took the lead through Mohamed Diame but goals from, Olivier Giroud, Walcott and a third from Santi Cazorla gave the away side the win.

West Ham’s last visit to Arsenal was a 1-0 loss and they haven’t beaten Wednesday’s opponents since April 2007 when Bobby Zamora scored the only goal of the game. West Ham did the double over Arsenal that season as they beat them at home in October as well.

A win for West Ham would put them on to 31 points from 23 games. This means they will be only three wins away from that special 40 point mark. They will also move up to tenth in the table and above Sunderland and Stoke City. A win for Arsenal would keep them in sixth position and four points off the Champions League spot.
