See us in, in style

West Ham’s 0-0 draw with West Brom last week was a fairly dour affair and the biggest news story to come out of it was that Sam Allardyce just selected six subs at the Hawthorns.

It was a gentle nudge in the direction of the board to suggest we need a few more bodies in the upcoming January window.

With key players missing, last week’s bench was made up of Spiegel, Tomkins, Spence, Moncur, Lletget and Maiga a real mixture of youth and experience. With the returning Jack Collison this weekend’s tie with Everton will mean the Hammers are likely to line up with seven subs again.

A busy festive period awaits for the Irons with a squad missing key players like Mohamed Diame, Andy Carroll, George McCartney and Ricardo Vaz Te it means the squad players in Big Sam’s team will need to step up to the plate.

Although West Ham’s Boxing Day clash with Arsenal has been postponed due to the latest ludicrous decision by Tube drivers to strike, The Hammers will need the likes of Gary O’Neil and Matthew Taylor to perform to the highest standards, if we are going to have a successful Christmas period starting with tomorrows clash with high flying Everton.

West Ham’s last three games with the Toffees have ended with both teams picking up a share of the spoils but the Hammers will want to pick up all three points before their mini break. There is no doubting how important this spell is. It is a time that can make or break a season, you only have to look at Reading to see how a series of bad results can leave you cast adrift.

If the Hammers can string a few results together they could well take a giant step to Premier League safety. After a tricky month which saw the East end club face Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea as well as Liverpool, the Hammers will be pleased to see the likes of Reading and Norwich on the horizon. It is vital the Irons pick up points against teams that could be around us at the end of the season.

David Gold has confirmed on his one on one Q&A with fans on his Twitter that the Hammers won’t be spending big in the January window I suspect the east end club will be bringing in a few faces.

Nicolas Anelka and Loic Remy are the latest players linked to a move to the East end but I suspect that the oldest of the French pair is far more likely to step through the John Lyall gate. Anelka has teamed up with Big Sam before at Bolton Wanderers and is in the twilight of his career following an unsuccessful retreat to China with Didier Drogba.

If the Hammers could pair Anelka and Carroll together I’m sure the Hammers will comfortably stay up as the intelligence of Anelka teamed up with the power of Carroll will make the Hammers frontline stronger than it has been in a long time.

Come on you Irons; see us into the New Year in style.
