What would hinder us most?

|

West Ham United have really managed to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League this year, evidence is in abundance judging by results and being 6th in the league. But would we be there if It wasn’t for Mark Noble or Mohamed Diame and which one would we struggle without more?

Looking back through the games that have been played I can’t help but praise the pair for their efforts and form and without them I honestly don’t think we would be 6th in the league, but more like 16th! However, when it comes to deciding who has had a larger impact this season it’s very hard to separate the two. After crafting comparison s between the two I have come up with an answer.

Since West Ham signed Momo Diame I think it’s more than fair his been nothing short of a revelation for us and very similar to the talents of Marc Vivian Foe. Momo has such power and drive when going forward it’s sometimes impossible to stop him, as his like a human ball-dozer and he is often involved in the majority of our attacks and defensive duties; a proper box to box midfielder.

On the other hand the strides and leaps Mark Noble has made this season make the choice so hard, as he is literally at the heart of everything. Noble is the longest serving player for the club and a fan himself, he dictates play and wins the ball back more than any other player; the only other player close to competing with him is Momo.

When I look at our midfield I can’t deny the fact it’s the best side we have had in years, quality such as Jack Collison and Alou Diarra even struggle to get into the side. With the likes of Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble, Momo Diame, Mathew Jarvis and Yossi Benayoun we have such quality. But it’s the combination of Momo and Noble that fascinates me, as they both compliment each other so well.

The pair are very similar types of players, the only difference can see between them is that where as Momo bases his game on power and driving runs, Noble is more determined and driven by heart rather than power and its great having the two contrasts.

The question, ’What would hinder us more, a team without Noble or a side without Diame?’ Well my answer is, we would struggle more without Momo, because there are players in the side that are able to start attacks as Nolan and Yossi both are capable. The problem is we lack players in the side that love to run at the opposition (other than Ricardo Vaz Te and Mathew Jarvis ) and having Diame in the side gives us a different option, rather than the very predictable long ball up to Andy Carroll all the time.

  • Legends says:

Agree with your assessment of Momo. … I see the midfield 3 as organising themselves in the following way – Noble holding and building; Momo running down and driving forward; and Nolan feeding of Carroll and getting himself into the box.
Momo’s driving runs, his skill and excellent ability to win back the ball is very difficult to replace in that role. I would say only Yossi could fill in there without the team losing the edge. … Noble’s role on the other hand is more easily replaced with Diarra (or Collison), perhaps even Tomkins.
I’m personally worried about our delivery from set pieces, our often lack of quality in advanced positions (Demel’s shot against Stoke was schoolboy stuff) and the possibility of losing 2 centre backs to injury at the same time.
