Who should replace RVT?

|

With the Hammers struggling to grip hold of a solid run of games and stand out performances, the injury suffered by Ricardo Vaz Te is surely only going to make things worse…would it not?

With our season going relatively well so far, lying in 8th place in the Barclays Premier League, it’s safe to say things could be much worse at this point. However the lads have worked hard and you can see it clearly in their performances against the likes of Arsenal (despite the result) Fulham and QPR.

The frustrating thing with us is that we lack attacking outlets, someone who can provide and take on a player (other than RVT and Matt Jarvis), as well as a striker who is clinical in front of the net, therefore we have to make the most of what we do have, however things have just go so much harder with Ricardo out injured, one positive is that is surgery is reported to have been successful on his dislocated shoulder but will still be out for up to 3 months.

The question is, who will replace him? Some people are suggesting that is should be Modibo Maiga as he is showing signs of making an impact in the side after scoring against both Crewe and Wigan Athletic. I also feel he should be given the chance to prove his worth, but just not in the formation we play, I honestly believe he would perform so much better playing in a 4-4-2 formation alongside Andy Carroll, rather than deploying him out-wide in the RVT role.

Another contestant for the place is of course Yossi Benayoun and with his flair and bundles of experience in the league its hard not to consider him, the question mark over this option is the fact would his legs be capable of out pacing the quick fullbacks the league is currently full of right now and would his skills be used to the fullest playing out-wide rather than in a more central role?

This issue really highlights the weaknesses in our side, we lack width despite the signings we have made over the Transfer Window, the players we do have are more inside forwards rather than wingers, we need a Nathan Dyer or Adam Johnson in the side, but we just don’t have it.

It would be interesting to see if Big Sam will give one of the youth players a chance to prove their worth, maybe the hot prospect in Robert Hall could prove his worth in that role despite being yet another forward? I personally feel like we should look into the chance to get a couple of wide men in on loan in January and one of the names I would have liked would have been Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, but it’s looking more likely he will feature for them on a regular basis.

It will be interesting to see who will get the nod ahead of the game against Southampton, my money is on Yossi as it’s starting to look like his finding his feet playing for the club.
