Can we become a Premier League force?

|

There is no doubt what the objective is this season; no matter how well we have started the main objective is simple, survival. The Hammers must survive this year the rewards are huge as the T.V revenue sky rockets as of next season. But with a little consistency over the next few years just how far can West Ham go.

As a club consistency has been few and far between over recent years with 4 managers in just over 5 years it’s hard to keep a solid base, new managers, new players, fresh ideas a new start. If we can get Big Sam to sign on for a few more years the Hammers can finally try to become a consistent force in the Premier League.

I’m going to use Everton as an example, Everton like us aren’t blessed with riches and star name players, they don’t buy endless amounts of players in transfer windows, their sensible with their money and in David Moyes they have a consistency that we lack. There is no doubting Moyes ability to manage as well with many pundits touting him as a potential replacement for Sir Alex at United. If the Hammers can become half as consistent as Everton I’ll be a very happy man.

Away from the Toffees, and back to the East end, I’ve touched upon the importance of keeping Big Sam, as I believe he has started a great legacy at West Ham thus far, making us hard to beat and well organised. Not only that but he has brought in some top quality players like Andy Carroll and Mohamed Diame too add to the signings he made last season in Kevin Nolan and Matty Taylor, with a little bit of money at his disposal I’m more than confident he can create a squad  of real quality.

For me the main factor if we are to become real contenders for regular top ten finishes and challenging for Europe is still to be decided and is still a highly contested issue for the traditionalist, a move to Stratford and the Olympic Stadium. A report ran in one of the Broadsheets today suggests the Hammers are favourites to get the stadium and could move in as early as 2015. If we could get the stadium, we would not only have more revenue and less debt allowing us to bring in higher quality names that are required to become a more successful club. But also a stadium that brings football back to the fans again, cheaper prices will allow fans who can’t pay the ridiculous price at the Boleyn can return to watch the club they love.

The squad we have has a good core, it just lacks that strength in depth that the big clubs have, up front and at the back we look woefully light in numbers. If Carroll were to get injured we only have the under confident Carlton Cole to come in. And after Reid, Collins and Tomkins we only have youths to come in. For me this is the main thing that has to be rectified if we want to be consistently at the top half of the league.

Do I think we can become a consistent force in the Premier League? Call me biased, call me deluded, for me if we get the Olympic stadium I see no reason to why we can’t challenge for Europe.
