Noble’s contract extension splits opinion

|

Mark Noble has been reported to be signing a new 5 year deal with the club this week, having agreed terms after rejecting the Hammers’ previous offer to extend his time at the club.

He’s had impressive stats this season, often running the most miles out of any player in the Premier League and completing the most tackles, but I just feel like the midfielder isn’t shining the way he used to.

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

I took to Twitter to take a straw poll of Hammers fans, and 63% weren’t too fussed on Nobes, many of them mentioning the words ‘overrated’or ‘average’ when describing him. 37% saw him in a more positive light, with phrases like ‘orchestrator’ and ‘our best and most valuable player’ being used.

It definitely seems the opinion tides are turning on the Academy product. From the opinions that were gathered, most seemed to think he was only still in our team as he’s West Ham through and through, rather than great performances in claret and blue.

Some of you seem to think it’s time for a midfield switch up, saying ‘I wouldn’t be too distraught if we put Alou Diarra in’ and ‘can’t fault his passion and effort, but honestly, I think Nolan, Diame and Diarra are all stronger.’

Perhaps it’s just time for Noble to stop taking corners and free kicks, and save his set piece skills for the penalty spot? I can’t help thinking that a lot of annoyance stems from the fact that a lot of people would prefer Matt Taylor or Jarvis to be swinging them in instead of Noble, who let’s face it, doesn’t always get it right.

What are your thoughts on Noble? Still love him like when he first exploded into the team from the Academy? Or has he failed to fulfil his potential? I’m genuinely interested to see what fellow fans think, as there seems to be a lot of divided opinion about him.

Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment or tweeting me at @alwaysintune with your Noble rating or slating.

he needs to improve in certain areas. but he’s got the basis of great player. … ive said this before, but he needs to be create more in the final third from open play. It’s in his game but he just doesnt do it. … But with experience he’ll start reading the game better and better. over the next 5 years (peak years) i’m sure we’ll be happy he’s still one of us.

Mark Noble is West Ham through & through. However, I feel that he isn’t quite Premirship standard. His lack of pace results in too many free kicks conceded just outside our penalty area. Also, he would rather make a sideways pass than provide a through ball. Although he is well loved by some, I feel that there are better players available.

agree that he tends to give away freekicks in stupid positions. he needs to stop doing this, it’s so frustrating! but i dont think he does it through lack of pace, because he’s there to challenge, he just tackles poorly at times. i think this is pyschological not physical. … i also agree on the through balls. but instead of going elsewhere to find a player who does this better, we should work with him as an unfinished product. There’s nothing wring with playing it simple and keeping possession, as long as that’s not all he does. He’s still relatively young and i think over the next 2 seasons he’ll improve where he needs to.

Plenty of people say Noble is overated, but then complain that we don’t play as well when he is injured! Says it all.

    • Bert says:

It doesn’t say it all. If we don’t play as well when Noble isn’t playing then its because his replacement is worse. Buy someone better than Noble then get rid.

Extremely overrated by the West Ham faithful purely for the two facts that he’s a West Ham fan himself and that he’s also our longest serving player. If fans remove thier claret n blue tinted glasses, here lays a very average championship player, who’s slow, chases the game, makes stupid challenges on edge of his own box and receives the ball only to pass it sideways or usually backwards instantly. Rarely beating his man or looking for intelligent forward pass. However he’s a cracking penalty taker and tries his best as he’s proud to put on the shirt.

I’ve been to all the games this season been very impressed with noble great control great tackling people stop thinking his a goal scorer only penaltys future captain

he can only play to whats around him which hasn’t been alot in recent years.i think he’s class best yet to come.

I remember when we sold Zamora and everyone said it was the right move, that he wasn’t good enough to play for us any more. This reminds me a little of that. Noble is one of those players that produces things you don’t always pick up on – like a 98% pass completion rate and, as detailed above, the miles he runs during each game. To the idiot above that said he’s an average Championship player – have a word. He’s a solid Prem perfomer with the potential to go further. Also, BFS wouldn’t play Nobes even if he was Bobby Moore’s son and married to David Gold’s daughter unless he were good enough. The one disparaging remark I do agree with, though, is that Jarvis should take set pieces now, pens aside.

Are you kidding, mate? The fat prick plays Jussi and Collins, JoB out of position, and leaves Jarvis on the bench

So I wouldn’t use the argument of BFS’s team selections to make your point…

Noble is below average EPL, above average Championship player

      End of.

i personally never said selling Zamora was a good move. it was a big mistake! …as was selling etherington and collins. … i also think faubert should have stayed as a good squad player, but he just couldnt drop his negative reputation with the fans. …

    • Iron Man says:

98% means little in a match where only a few off those went forwards. You watch his next game, he gets the ball and will play it sideways and backwards as soon as he gets it. He needs to look up and make his own space, Momo is outstanding at doing this and think Nobes will learn from it. The thing that makes he a Championship player and not a Premier one is that he has continuously disappointed in the Premier whilst arguably looked decent in the Championship. He needs to step up and add more to his game. At his age, remember he’s 25 now, not 19 or so, he needs to bring more to the game because a player, whoever he may be, if he’s in midfield and has no pace, lets players ghost past him easily, fails to pick out through balls and penalties aside, doesn’t score can be easily replaced. Should he of been offered a new contract? Without a doubt but there’s more to football than knocking it sideways and back every touch to get your % up.

Some people are so hard to please. Scott Parker won Hammer of the Year 3 years in a row as a slow player, with next to nothing in the creative department and weighing in with about the same amount of goals as Nobes does. If not LESS. With 4-5 years more experience under his belt, Noble could be as good, if not better than Scott ‘Judas’ Parker. Noble does have faults I agree, but competing with Diarra, a 44 time capped French International for a spot, will only benefit his growth.

  • Stev Williams says:

Are you mad!?! Ask the people who go every week, not the idiots on Twatter. He’s the heartbeat of the team.

  • Steve says:

Absolutely agree Noble plays like a crab sideways and too slow he needs to pass forward more quickly on saturday Vaz Te got bad press but time and time again if Noble had seen the pass quickly there would have been a one on one situation.
I think for his development he needs another season in the championship where he enjoyed more time on the ball giving him the chance to develop a more positive style.

  • essexirons says:

    Scott ‘judas’ Parker???
How can you say that?? Players do leave clubs without being a judas.. He was our Hammer of the Year for 3 years, he stayed a year longer than he had to, he went with our blessing & will be welcome back at any time.

  • Dale says:

Yeah sorry, how can I say that? To compare Parker to Judas is unfair….on Judas! At least Judas hung himself afterwards. I would never welcome a player back to Upton Park from those scumbags. Back to my point, all I’m saying is Noble is not all that dissimilar to Parker in his style of play, physical ability and determination on the field. If Noble is given the 4-5 extra years experience that Parker had on him, he could well be a better player. Why do people look at Parker through Rose-tinted glasses?? I’d stand out in a team composed of Radoslav Kovac, Jonathon ‘Spectator’ Spector, Stanislas and the rest of the muppets.
