Dare to dream?

This season has so far been as good as you probably could have asked for as a West Ham United fan. At times the Hammers have excited going forward, mainly against Fulham and they have been solid at the back, the only game we conceded in we have been beaten. Though a win at the weekend would show signs of potentially good things to come this year.

We should be excited! We shouldn’t really have reason to complain with the state of affairs at the club. We have regained our place in the greatest and best league in the world, like a duck to water. It’s been fluent and we haven’t looked like a club out of their depth that has just been promoted and cannot hold our own in this division. The experience that we have in Sam Allardyce has proven to be invaluable so far. Sam has recognised what we need to consolidate our place and this knowledge and foresight should set us well for the season. The greatest improvement from our last campaign in the Premier League in my opinion is the solidity that we have at the back. When was the last time in recent memory that we kept 3 clean sheets in our first 4 games in the Premier League? The key to this fine form at the back has arguably been our most improved player, Winston Reid.

Reid has been a catalyst of our success so far, Man of the Match against Norwich, scored the second in the win over Fulham and was very good for us on the road to Swansea. He is keeping out of the team our best centre back on ability James Tomkins, as James Collins is as important to the team as he gives the experience that the back four needs. If Reid can keep his form up at the back as an unsung hero and helps the side keep more clean sheets, we’ll win more games than we’ll lose.

Though I can hear the cry, well hold on, we have only played four games and we still have a long way to go. Obviously, we are still only going to be trying to stay in the Premier League and our main target is survival. I’m not stating that we are going to conquer the odds and as nice as it would be, finish inside the top 8. We are no where near that level, but with signings of Andy Carroll’s ilk and whether you agree with the move or not, the move to the Olympic Park can only show that we are a club that has aspirations and motivated for success.

Moreover, we must focus on the present before we can complete those goals that we have in the future. A win over Sunderland would more than certainly show that Upton Park will be a very tough place to come this season, and for that reason this weekend will be a very important game for the club. After Sunderland, we welcome strong London rivals, Arsenal and if we can have the North London side visiting West Ham, a side which have won every game at home, visiting a fortress as it were it would be a massive psychological edge. But more importantly, If we can get a quarter of the way to 40 points, which is the obvious target for West Ham this season at least, after just five games it’d signal the best realistic start to our season that we could of wanted.
