Where is our maverick?

|

I’m not one to moan. I’m really not. However, I think I have established the gripe I have with the current side.

We’re a bit boring.

Don’t crucify me for this, just bear with me. When we beat Brighton 6-0 we were awesome, entertaining and played great football. When we wiped the floor with Cardiff City over two legs of the play-off semi finals, the football (at times) was outstanding. We looked comfortable and, shock horror, the football was attractive. Same applies for the second half against Hull in the away game last year. When it’s not ‘long ball’ (which isn’t as often as the media would like us to believe) the football is good.

However, the moan, and a strange one at that, is that we currently don’t have any characters in the side. For all Mark Noble’s rallying cries at the players and crowd, there is nobody in the side who comes across as a headturner. In my opinion we need one and need one badly. He doesn’t even have to be our best player. Manchester City have Mario Balotelli, Liverpool have Luis Suarez, Manchester United had Cristiano Ronaldo. All controversial but creative, exciting players.

There are two sides to this argument. Firstly, as our first season back in the big time we should be happy to just grind out results and concentrate on staying. If it’s rigid, professional performances we need without any flair then so be it. Ultimately this is a results based industry.

However, us, the fans, pay to be entertained. Granted if at the final whistle next week we’ve beaten Villa (3-1 my prediction) the majority of us won’t care about the performance. Up to a point neither will I. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a maverick like Paolo di Canio again? Someone to make us lift from our seats in excitement and disbelief, even if just for a split second.

All I do know is that if we win next week, it’s a triumphant return to the Premiership that will have us singing in The Queens. And that should be entertaining enough even if the performance isn’t.

Regards, Smudgy.

  • Brendan@theBoleyn says:

Really guys!! Sam wouldn’t have a maverick on his team. His way is direct and diciplined route one football. He has proven that he can make his tactics work in the PL but I’m wondering what the Irons are sacrificing.

But your missing the point… Its all down to money and let’s face it we cannot attract big game players on big wages. I do think we are in the best hands we have ever been in the board and a solid manager that will, and worst keep us were we want to be. In time I think we can attract the better players… Sam has done it before in anelka, campo, okacha and that was at Bolton!! Imagine what he can get in time playing at the best stadium (if we get it) in London…

Times ahead are good… We have players like noble now fighting for a place which is great for the whole team plus the defence will have to put in a shift if they want that jersey now. Irons!!!

Great read again… to the guy who commented above-mentioned you have no idea what ur talking about.. big Sam introduced jay jay to the premiership and djorkaff cant get much more maverick.. u plonker

    • Ryan says:

Granted your right, but the author mentions players like suraez, Mario and Ronaldo of which we won’t be able to attract but like I said, in time, and it will take some time, I think we can. We simply don’t have the money. Who knows morrison could come good… I hope.

    ryan is spot on

  • Boo Hammer says:

The board should read this excellent article, and then do whatever it takes to sign Joey Barton. He’s a real character and no mistake, despite not being as hard as his brother Michael (if truth be told).

  • essex Iron says:

Agreed, its morrison we just need to say fek it and give him a chance.
I guess when the managers feel hes ready then we will see him i hope

  • Daniel says:

    Madibo Maiga is a badboy!

  • Dale Mitchell says:

Everything you said is spot on, i went to watch the Hammers play Ipswich, and they rip us apart, we looked slow sluggish and extremly boring, i think we need a new fitness coach aswell, if that friendly was anything to go by, they looked like complete strangers, every pass was poor and not completed, as for Jussi, he look his age alright, i think i saw a walking stick inside his net for after the game, i can’t believe they did’nt pay GreenO the £50.G he asked for, cos if Nolan is worth that then GreenO is certanily worth it, we are strating to morph into Bolton of ten years ago but with the players that were in that same team !!! Yes i’m worried about the forth coming season, we are turning the team into giants that will shield the defence 4-5-1 tactic is here to stay, alan curbishley all over again, and look what happened to him, so fingers crossed he get a bad start and we bring home Paolo Dicanio, then and only then will you see entertainment we West Ham fans crave for. sorry if people disagree with me but it’s just my opinon, remember when Pardew got us promoted, that season he played attacking football and we survived the drop. lets hope Sam decides to try the same.

  • Graham Lang says:

    Yes, Yes and Yes.

  • West ham dan says:

We will never be like Man City , Liverpool or Man U to get these types of players ….
