It’s all looking good for West Ham

|

When writing a piece on West Ham it is always hard not to be over critical but on the other hand as a fan you always seem to disagree with what someone else says. The same questions have cropped up over and over again in the last 12 months,

Is Sam Allardyce the right man for the job?

Do we have any passers of the ball?

Does the side have any natural width?

Is the formation 433 or 451?

Who are the next crop of youngsters and are they good enough?

I listen to my family and their friends who chat in the supporters club before every home game and they just never seem to be happy.

Personally I am actually approaching this season with an air of optimism, apart from the top 5 and Newcastle United and Everton the rest of the sides seem to be as good or as bad as each other.

Looking at the side Sam Allardyce has started to mould together he has concentrated on the spine, Jussi Jaaskelainen I suspect will start number 1 and he has plenty of Premier League experience. In recent season’s the reliable keepers have been closer to 40 than 30 so I am not too worried by he’s age.

James Collins is a solid signing with plenty of experience and the extra strength in the air is what we need to compliment James Tomkins. Alou Diarra is a solid defensive midfielder and a natural replacement for Scott Parker, Mohamed Diame is another typical Allardyce signing, Big Strong and mobile he ticks all the boxes and these 2 will become crowd favourites with their strong work rate and willingness to be involved.

Kevin Nolan has failed to impress a lot of West Ham fans since the move down south move but he’s game will be more suited to the premier league after the hustle and bustle of the championship and I think the double figure contribution from him will continue.

We still have not solved the problem of every midfielder on our books being a central midfielder, we will not get away with playing Collison on the left and Gary O’Neil on the right, the links with Matt Jarvis and Royston Drenthe are all well and good but until they sign on the dotted line it’s all words.

The same age old problem is finding that 20 Goal a season marksman, Modibo Maiga reminds me of the Victor Obinna signing, how often do these unknown players actually pay off for a newly promoted side?

I think it is a big season for Carlton Cole, he has an opportunity to win the fans over once and for all and the question for Ricardo Vaz Te is he a Premier League player or a good championship player, yet again more questions asked than answers.

Concerning the youngsters I am sad at seeing Freddie Sear’s go, but I am not sure it because we will miss he’s ability it’s just another admission that a youngster has failed to make the grade as with Stanislass , Hines, Stech, Brown and Olly Lee of recent years.

Even now we as fans cling on to the hope that they will be the next Bobby Moore or Trevor Brooking but the reality is that they only come along once every generation.

As always though the production still sends more players to the first team’s squad’s way and we hope that Dan Potts, George Moncur and Robert Hall are that little Gem we are searching for.

  • Geoff says:

Im pretty optimistic to, well until today were im filled with excitement and nerves!!

I predict our starting line up will be….

    Jaaskelainen
    O’Brien – Tomkins – Collins – McCartney
    O’Neil – Diame – Noble
Vaz Te – Cole – Taylor

Big Sam has said Diarra and Maiga are not yet fit to play, Collison hasn’t trained since play-off final so wont be in contention, and im not sure whether Nolan has recovered but i hope he has if not it leaves just O’Neil to take his place unless Taylor drops into center mid with Vaz on the left and Maynard on the right. I hope Sam Baldock gets a place on the bench at least and im dreaming of him coming onn to score the winner to show Big Sam that we should keep hold of the lad. Can’t see it happening though! Hope we can reverse the 3-0 drubbing we got on the same day 2 years ago but imm expecting a tight game that either side can win.

Remember to get behind the lads today and leave the 2,000 Villa fans shaking in the corner!! COYI!!!
