A few thoughts on yesterday

|

As the transfer clock ticks down Sam Allardyce today confirmed the Hammers aren’t currently in talks with any clubs regarding transfers but should this be the case after today’s 3-0 reverse in Wales?

Two defensive howlers from James Collins and a goalkeeping error from Jussi Jaaskelainen meant the Hammers gifted Swansea City an early lead. With Matt Jarvis and George McCartney forming a new partnership on the left hand side for the first time after just one training session it’s no surprise that Swansea’s main attacking threat came from the right hand side.

The record signing Jarvis who made his Hammers debut just 24 hours after his move was confirmed looked the Hammers main threat skinning players and providing natural width and an eye for a pass. The West Ham faithful will look forward to seeing him when he has settled more and got used to playing with his new teammates. And I for one thing he will be a solid signing for us.

It’s upfront and at the back that I worry about, the Hammers look a little toothless up front at times, and lack a quality striker who will regularly bang in the goals. I have read this week from both Allardyce and from fans as well, everyone wants a 20+ goal a season striker and they are hard to come by, and boy could the Hammer use the man who was in the Sky Sports studio today, Dean Ashton.

At the back two errors from our most experience players is disappointing, and as much as it worries me at the back I think the Irons could last until the winter window before strengthening at the back if its required in January. But for me it’s a big name striker that is required between now and Friday’s 11pm deadline. Dean Ashton again alluded to it, Cole looked a lost man and really needs the pressure of another player and at the same time someone to take the pressure off his broad shoulders, a loan move is being touted for a quality striker so here’s hoping David Gold, David Sullivan and Allardyce can work their magic.

The frustrating thing was we looked solid in the first half and we never really looked in any danger and in the first half you could say the Irons shaded it, but two poor errors meant it was always going to be an uphill battle and the spirit was gone and as Dean Ashton said “the disappointing thing was the lack of fight in the second half. “

Let’s just put this down to a bad day at the office and congratulate Swansea on a comfortable win and move on Crewe on Tuesday night before we hope to see a response in the league in front of the cameras on Saturday against in form Fulham.

Come on you Irons!

I can understand where you are coming from but we need to ensure that we do not need to buy in Jan if things go wrong and we are playing catch up. Our FBs are a major concern for me as is the fact we do not have a prolific striker, and they need to be addressed now not in Jan

Agree fullbacks were woeful and do not look up the task in the PL.
How can we expect to score when we line up so defnsivley. I am not a great Cole fan but he is not going to score without service. Where is the new Brooking, Devonshire, Berkovic, Di Canio. We just have no midfielders who have the skill or guile to unlock defences.
