Speed kills

|

While it doesn’t look like we are any closer to landing any of the ghost transfer rumors swirling around, it does appear that one of our supposed targets, Yilmaz, will not be coming to Upton Park. This is rather disappointing for me because I believe Yilmaz would have had a great impact on the club and been able to score goals in the top flight, much like he has been doing for his Turkish club Trabzonspor, as well as for the Turkish national team.

Anyhow, the club must move on, and while I’m quite excited about the idea of us signing a winger of the caliber of Elia, I am growing increasingly worried that we are not being linked with any top notch fullbacks. In the Premier League, speed kills, and our wide play is clearly lacking in the pace department. While wingers are necessary, we will need pace in the fullback position because if we continue to rely on players like Joey O’Brien, we will be forced to hold our defense rather deep, which will severely hurt our ability to go forward effectively. Even if we do concede a goal, then having a slow fullback push forward only leaves us vulnerable.

I’m just concerned about the lack of pace our wide players have. Hopefully we can land Elia and a fullback or two, because without it we will not be able to hang in the Premier League. I trust our speed at centerback, with James Tomkins and Winston Reid. Our central midfielders are all solid. With Yilmaz potential gone, we need to land another striker. I just hope he’s fast.

i disagree that the need for speed is so fundamental. ive been hearing this alot lately in england, like a new fashionable trend. the italians didnt have a lot of speed last night, but they had organisation, intelligence, ability and application. the english fast boys instead struggled to put 2 passes together. … we need to be careful when we put too much importance on 1 attribute over others. …speed, strength, height, … they’re all false friends if the player has nothing else. … i also disagree with the exaggerated criticism of O’Brien.
